Our organization is in the process of looking for a female coach that has softball experience. We found someone who we think will be great. We are just unsure as to whether we are allowed to pay her for her services since she is currently playing on a scholarship. We don't want to get her in trouble or her school.

If we cannot pay her, are there other means of compensation that will not violate NCAA rules?

Any thoughts?

Alot if not all college kids have some sort of a paid job thru the summer. If she were playing and being paid it would be a different animal. I cant see where employment as a coach would be a violation of her scholarship. But just to be safe might be best to read up on the NCAA by laws

My best guess is that she cannot be paid in the sport she is competing. The NCAA is very complicated, but she should be able to ask her AD that question.

NCAA EMPLOYMENT POLICIES

Criteria Governing Compensation to Student-Athletes - Compensation may be paid to a student-athlete:

(a) Only for work actually performed; and

(b) At a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locality for similar services.

Such compensation may not include any remuneration for value or utility that the student-athlete may have for the employer because of the publicity, reputation, fame or personal following that he or she has obtained because of athletics ability.

The following rules are applicable to any type of student-athlete employment, whether during the academic year or summer:

The rate of pay must be the normal rate for the duties performed.
The hours paid must be the hours worked.
Payment in advance of hours worked is not permitted.
Transportation to work may be provided only if transportation is available to other non-athlete employees in similar positions.

Fee-for-Lesson Instruction
A student-athlete may receive compensation for teaching or coaching sport skills or techniques in his or her sport on a fee-for-lesson basis, provided:

(a) Institutional facilities are not used;

(b) Playing lessons shall not be permitted;

(c) The institution obtains and keeps on file documentation of the recipient of the lesson(s) and the fee for the lesson(s) provided during any time of the year; and

(d) The compensation is paid by the lesson recipient (or the recipient's family) and not another individual or entity.

(e) Instruction to each individual is comparable to the instruction that would be provided during a private lesson when the instruction involves more than one individual at a time.

(f) The student-athlete does not use his or her name, picture or appearance to promote or advertise the availability of fee-for-lesson sessions.

Like Canyonjoe said.. She should check with her AD

Depends On The Day
If she's at an NCAA DI school and returning on an athletic scholarship for future play, I would suggest the question be directed to the school's NCAA Compliance Officer or call NCAA directly to be safe.

Every sports camp that my dd has been to over the last 6 years has had scholarship athletes from various colleges coaching at the softball and volleyball camps.

The answer is "Yes, they can be paid", but the athlete should tell her coach and talk to the NCAA Compliance Officer (assuming they have one) to be sure.
