When is the batter runner supposed to use the running lane?

We had a situation where the batter hit a weak grounder up the first base line. The batter-runner collided with the first baseman trying to field the ball. The ball did roll into foul territory just as the collision and the touching of the ball occurred. The batter runner ran in fair territory(inside or on the line) until just moments before the collision.

This is probably one of those had to see it situations.

Any input?

The running lane only has to do with the batter/ runner interfering with the fielders ability to receive a throw at 1st base. What you are asking about is simply interference. The offense must give the defensive player room to field the batted ball. If the ball was in fair territory at the time of contact and it prevented the defense from fielding the ball, it is interference at that moment. What the ball does after that doesn't matter because the ball was dead at the instant of the interference.

I am putting Comp's cell phone number on speed dial so I can call him and hand the phone to less competent umpires....
