Alex Newsome, a left-handed pitcher, was throwing at batting practice when he was hit in the head by a line drive around 4 p.m. Newsome, a manager for the middle-school team, was pitching from behind a protective screen, but had leaned slightly outside the net.

No! How awful for everyone.

I had a mom yesterday that showed me her black eye. Her 8 yo nailed her with a line drive, but there was no net. She is young and was a 3 sport athlete and she said she had no idea what hit her.

Just terrible, our prayers go out to the family.

My 8YO son plays PONY baseball and I am amazed at how hard some of these kids can hit the ball with their private batting instruction, Easton Mako's, etc. I'm considering having him play infield with a fielding mask on and getting a cage on his batting helmet. My fastpitch friends are amazed that the old school baseball culture frowns upon the safety of these young kids. How many kids need to get hurt or killed before baseball gets a clue?
