Our local league is losing players to neighboring leagues. Our local league does not have a travel team. When parents are questioned as to why they are sending their kids elsewhere, answer was their kids had to play with a league that had a travel team so their kids could play travel ball.

So is there a ASA rule that says to play travel ball you must play with that league first?

For travel ball teams, you do not need to have any league affiliation at all. But to play on a select team associated with a league you need to play in that league. ASA has these separated into A (travel ball) and B and C for rec league all star (select teams). The B and C teams can compete in rec league all star tournaments since they have this affiliation with a rec league. A level teams cannot.

Anyone can start an A level team, you just can't play in all star tournaments, you can play every other type of tournament though.

All "real" (for lack of a better term) travel teams are what ASA considers as A teams but the teams themselves typically play tournaments under several sanctioning bodies.

Thanks for the reply..... But can you clarify rules a little better?

ASA dictates that the allstar teams must be made up of girls which played for that league in the regular rec season
It also states (and this is a change this year due to select) that no girls can play in any other travel ball games (or practice, meet with team, try out etc) after March 31st

The player ranking and selection can NOT be discussed in any way shape or form until after May 1st

Note that this is mainly for state/national qualification in August (and a lot of leagues will not take any team that doesn't also meet the district/state/national rules into their tourneys)

in short if you don't have a allstar team you can't participate in the summer B level tournaments and other leagues can't pick up your players I to their teams

Your league should consider fielding a C or B level allstar team - you risk losing a lot of players otherwise - is your org a C level or B level ASA league ? You don't need a gold silver bronze in every division or field all divisions but I have to ask: why don't they field a team specially if your loosing players to other leagues due to the lack of one

In our area the "real" TB teams play under different sanctioning bodies and the tournaments are usually designated Open, A, B, C or All-Star and it has nothing to do with ASA.

Same out here. But if our team or yours were to play an ASA event they would be restricted to what ASA has classified as their A type of tournament.

Our club was losing the better players to neighboring leagues for the same reason. Not so much travel but they had teams 1 or 2 levels up. Most of the cities have the just signup and you can play but they also have Teams you need to try out for.

We thought we had enough talent this year so we fired up 1 10U and 1 14U Team playing at the higher level. 12U, 16U, 18U we did not. I would guess it is going to change year to year.

If you do have the talent I do think it makes sense to start a better team to play better competition.

(Last year they bump DD’s just come and play Team into the higher level Team playoffs. We got killed. :))

(By the way the new 10U and 14U Teams did not replace the just signup and play option for these age groups, it was in addition to.)

Our little league, if you choose to play for a neigboring league, you are ineligble for All-stars at the new league. You also need to submit paperwork for your home league to allow you to be waivered over to other league.
