MARIETTA, GA – Police in Marietta have arrested a 31-year-old Marietta man in connection with multiple sexual offenses against a minor child.

Isuru Pasan Perera was arrested Saturday on charges of felony first-degree cruelty to children, aggravated sodomy, aggravated sexual battery and computer pornography and misdemeanor sexual battery and distribution of obscene material. He remains in the Cobb County Jail without bond.

According to the police release, the original incident occurred in June 2010 when the female juvenile victim attended the Champion Softball Complex located at 505 Commerce Park Dr. Perera, who was the victim’s coach and trainer, used his position to coerce and intimidate the victim to commit multiple sexual acts against her.

“Numerous sexual assaults against the victim occurred over a two-year time frame,” the release states. “Every assault occurred in Perera’s office at the complex.”

The local department is concerned there may be other unreported victims of Perera and wants anyone with information to contact Detective Moeller at (770) 794-2366.

As far as your chils is concerned never trust anyone.

Some Tips on How to Protect Your Child from Sexual Abuse, see link.

Watch out for warning signs in adults

Children display signs that all is not well, but there are signs which are displayed from the abusers themselves. Try to remember that abusers typically do not look how you would expect an abuser to look. Contrary to popular media stereotypes, they do not look like monsters, or the type of face that stares out of you from a mugshot. Abusers are good at gaining trust....that's how they operate.....and therefore they can seem to be the nicest people...the most helpful...the most thoughtful....the most loving. Of course, don't go around suspecting someone may be an abuser because they are nice and good! But the point is not to rule them out if you have suspicions because they display characteristics that you don't feel are the typical monster-like features of a paedophile.

•Watch for adults who:
Refuse children privacy or invade their privacy.
Insist on physical affection even when the child looks uncomfortable.
Insist on “special time” alone from other adults and children.
Spend a lot of time with children instead of adults.
Buy children expensive gifts for no apparent reason.
Appear to put a lot of effort into getting close to children.
Have had previous allegations against them before.
Make you feel uneasy.....even if you can't put your finger on why.
Your child or other children seem afraid of.
Your child or other children do not want to be alone with.

A real shame for a lot of really good coaches (including his wife, an excellent PC) that work at that facility who have probably had their business and careers wrecked by someone who they thought they could trust (and this is in no way to diminish the impact on the victim(s)).

I have a friend who's daughter takes pitching lessons at that facility, and he told me that Perera was not a softball coach, but a strength and conditioning instructor. Does not really matter, because he is still a scumbag, but just thought I would clarify.

A strength coach at a Cobb County softball training facility is accused of having more than 30 sexual encounters with a teenager, Marietta police said Tuesday.

Investigators said they believe there could be additional victims.

Isuru Pasan Perera, 31, of Marietta faces a long list of charges including cruelty to children and aggravated sexual battery, both felonies. The assaults happened over two years in his closed, locked office at the Champions Fast Pitch Academy, and occurred without the victim’s consent, according to an arrest warrant obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Perera was arrested Saturday and was being held without bond Tuesday in Cobb County jail, booking records show. A probable cause hearing has been set for 1:30 p.m. Oct. 10, a spokeswoman for the Cobb County Magistrate Court said.

Alan Manheim, Perera’s attorney, declined to discuss the case, which remains under investigation.

In a statement released through a public relations firm, Champions said Perera had been placed on administrative leave after the allegations were made.

“We took steps to advise everyone with an interest in this matter as soon as we were made aware of the allegations,” Champions said in the statement.

The crimes began in June 2010 when the girl was 16 years old, the warrant states. Though 16 is the legal age of consent in Georgia, the crimes allegedly occurred without the victim’s consent and caused her mental anguish and pain, according to police.

Perera is also charged with computer pornography, a felony, and obscene material distribution, a misdemeanor, jail records show. While in his office with the victim, Perera, who was the girl’s coach/trainer, showed her pornographic images on his laptop computer, according to police.

“The accused would then talk to the victim about his sexual fantasies and how they related to the pornographic images that he was showing the victim,” Perera’s arrest warrant states.

Additional charges against Perera include sodomy and misdemeanor sexual battery.

“This is deeply troubling to all of us here,” the softball academy said in its statement. “We are committed to working every day to help young women achieve their athletic dreams. We are heartsick.

Another article that goes a little more in depth, if you own a facility that teaches youth like a training facility, there needs to be policies in place to prevent this from occurring.

If the charges are true, this guy is even worse than those that try to paint their weirdness as an affair. (I think. Oh, maybe not.) Anyway, if convicted, I hope that he never gets out of prison. And I am willing to bet that there are other victims.

Closed, locked office, 30 times? As an employer there should be some type of common sense barrier to protect kids from this. First of all when you are dealing with kids for a living an office shouldn't even have a door, if for security reasons you need one, a half glass door should be installed so at any time other adults can see activity when one on one with a kid.

The crimes began in June 2010 when the girl was 16 years old, the warrant states. Though 16 is the legal age of consent in Georgia, the crimes allegedly occurred without the victim’s consent and caused her mental anguish and pain, according to police.

Here lies the problem. That law is probably very outdated when a majority of families were started mid to late teens, in the early 1900's. So they had sexual relations for 2 years 16-18. What happened at the end of those 2 years for her to come forward? Did he promise her things, car/marriage/relationship/love and then dumped her, making her retaliate like a woman can? Or did he "force" her into the acts?

The state law is going to fudge this one up. Maybe the Feds will get him some time on the child pornography side.

Sluggers, as a former prosecutor, what are your views on this state law and the burden of proof on "victim's consent"?

Don't get me wrong, this is one sick bastard.
