So, I didn't want to interfere with the discussion in the other topic about redrawing batter boxes, but it got me thinking about a situation I encountered this season:

HS, Varsity, NFHS

As some of you may remember, we had a game at a field with a tree in left-field foul territory. This is at the same field at the same game as that situation, and I completely blanked on asking about this. At the plate meeting, after discussing the tree, the PU points out that the foul line on the 1B side has been drawn incorrectly, and is about 3 inches inside 1B when it meets the base (the outside edge of the chalk was about 3 inches inside the base), and continues at the same angle when it comes out the other side.

The PU said he was going to be calling the line as drawn, and I thought it should have been called as it should have been drawn. The line should have been redrawn, but it wasn't, and that was what we had. Besides redrawing the line, what is the appropriate remedy in this situation for the umpire? Call the line as drawn? Or call it as it should be?

Unfortunately, that is not as unusual as one would think. Not likely to be reset as those school/park employees who dress the field are likely to be gone for the day. What your umpire noted is also not unusual since there is a line there and not ridiculously off kilter The only exception to what he stated is that I would add that the ball hitting the base is, by rule, fair so the line would not apply in that case.

An alternative would be to get the players out there to obliterate the line and just let the umpire use the base as they would had there been no lines. And god help the first person to utter, "but blue, I saw chalk" on a close one called foul :)

The biggest thing I see are the batter boxes being drawn backwards. A lot of times it's kids dressing the fields.

My biggest pet peeve. Watching the "Grounds crew" fill in the holes with loose dirt and then sprinkle about 12 oz of water on top of 2 cubic feet of dried field dirt with a watering can. The first batter or pitcher looks like they are using a backhoe to get all the loose dirt out of the holes.

I think, as a coach, I would ask to rub out the last 6 feet before the base and use the line for the first 54. Would you have a problem with that request, MTR?

Why not 8 or 12 feet? What about behind the base? If you are going to obliterate any of it, should wipe out the entire thing.

Unless its the finals of a major event I would assume most just play it as it's drawn. There's a very nice complex around here with turf fields and painted lines. The batters boxes have been painted incorrectly and (from the stands) appear to only be about 2-3" off the plate. I'm surprised no one ever has had an issue with that, but they just play it as they are.
