JJ - the brush is fantastic, but the ball position at 12:00 is pointed to the camera (not the ideal "show it" position) and at 9:00 its pointed somewhere between 3rd base and the ground (should be "palm to sky" and leading with the elbow) thereby robbing her of maximum spin and velocity.

Look again at Amanda's arm and ball position at these key spots and compare that to this above clip. I think a video from the catcher's perspective will really help you see the difference.

good observation, we are aware of it and it is something she works on regularly along with the drive mechanics but those two things along with more arm bend are pretty stubborn fixes so right now we have had much more luck with improved front side resistance, which is what was the focus of the session where we took this clip.

And just to be clear, I know the clip was to focus on brush, but make sure that she doesn't lose good arm whip mechanics in the process because no amount of brush interference is going to help if the she doesn't have the palm in the correct spots upstream.

With that said, she has a lot of great things going on, great stride, glove arm, brush, front side resistance. Keep up the good work!

I wanted to add that after I finished watching the video 5 times focusing on the brush I then watched it 5 more times thinking what great front side resistance she has!! What are your favorites cues/drills for developing that area?

And just to play a little devils advocate in the absence of our long lost OILF is her ball position really that bad?? I know OILF would have said otherwise :)

I look at "bad" from the perspective of where other mechanics are. So I do describe her hand positions from 12 to 9 o clock as bad FOR HER because they are not as good as other areas of her motion. same thing with her drive and elbow looseness. since these are the areas than need the most improvement they are by definition "bad" In my book. If she were just starting or had other major flaws I would probably call the hand position "acceptable for now" or something else.

It's a process and in that process acceptable turns to bad when something else goes from bad to good, always working on making the next improvement.

I think some people approach it differently and try to maybe perfect one part before moving on, we have done it differently so we work on one area and when it has improved to the point of not being the big problem we move on the next thing.

So for instance, on front side resistance we have probably spent 3-4 three week spans really focusing on it, then it improves and we move on to drive, then it improves and we move on the spins etc. this of course is as a FOCUS within a more general practice.

A good analogy would be using a star pattern to tighten the lug nuts on a tire.

As for drills we do two things, the first is push backs at landing and the second is throwing rise balls. Rise balls just don't work at all with poor front side resistance. the spin and release angle of a rise ball require a firm front with a little nose behind the belly button. It over cooks it a little sometimes.

In fact, I find that a lot of her corrections now are coming in the form of pitch descriptions...I might say put more drop ball in the Body position if she is leaning way back, or put more curveball in your elbow when she is really locking it out. Sometimes I say "more risy on the release". If she is getting her hand too far behind the ball too early. Not really on topic, more of a general observation of how she is internalizing how different pitches feel and how she can use those feels to fix mechanics for other pitches because I find that each pitch has its own good points and bad points of how they affect her mechanics.

JJ. She looks great! I love how relax her arm is. 57 mph is awesome! How old is your DD? How tall is she? Just wanted to compare to my DD.

I was wondering does she hold the ball with 2 fingers or 3?
