One the best pitchers to ever play the game. All time NCAA leader in strikeouts. Threw harder than any woman who played the game. But according to OLIF she is doin' it all wrong. The fact OLIF needs an explanation of the Lock-It drill is proves what a student of pitching she truly is. I hope none of the noobs takes this trolling seriously.

D.........I'm going to help out here since this is my drill........

First..........Read the words in this clip OUT LOUD as they occur........Starting with "THE DRILL STARTS HERE"............

2w4xmqv.gif

First words: "THE DRILL STARTS HERE"......."NOT FROM HERE"....."THE DRILL STARTS HERE"........

These words mean EXACTLY what they say. The drill starts with the arm/hand HANGING LOOSELY DOWN AT THE SIDE to begin this drill.........Hence "THE DRILL STARTS HERE".........I AM NOT starting this drill by PUTTING/PLACING THE BALL BEHIND ME to start the drill..........Hence the words "NOT FROM HERE"..........I am hanging my arm/hand loosly down by my side.........THE DRILL STARTS HERE........

What comes next is the beginning of the drill............"TAKE IT BACK".........."TURN IT UP"........."THIS IS EXTERNAL ROTATION"............

D, this is THE FIRST HALF OF THE DRILL..........YOU CANNOT SKIP THE FIRST HALF OF THE DRILL..........You must start relaxed with the with ball in hand down by the thigh..........DD is NOT STARTING THE DRILL FROM THE CORRECT DRILL POSITION.

From there you take it back and turn it up.........Externally rotating.........This LOADS THE ARM to deliver the pitch/throw the ball with I/R............

The next words are the rest of the drill.........."LEAD WITH THE PINKIE FINGER"........"PULL IT DOWN AND THROW WITH I/R".......Read that last part again............"PULL IT DOWN AND THROW WITH I/R"........

Did any of the words JUMP OUT AT YOU in the last part?? LOL! GOOD! YOUR DD IS NOT DOING THOSE LAST 8 WORDS in the 2nd half of the drill......

Now that last words in the clip............"THERE IS NO PAUSE IN THIS DRILL"............That means exactly what it says.........

Watch me after the words "THERE IS NO PAUSE IN THIS DRILL"..........That's when I'm performing the ENTIRE DRILL........Start to finish........From the bottom.........Rock it back and turn it up and pull it down and throw it with I/R........Without pausing......This drill is as much about RHYTHM, syncronization and timing as it is about throwing with I/R.......

So.........Get ready to perform the drill by positioning the hand at the at the bottom..........THEN........Turn it up and back, pull it down and through leading with the pinkie and throwing with I/R..........

Bottom line..........She is NOT starting at the bottom with a relaxed arm........THEN rocking it back and turning it up AND pulling IT DOWN and throwing I/R.............ALL IN ONE MOTION...........

DD is putting he ball behind her to start the drill........Then throwing sidearm around her hip............

This is what Doug is trying to point out...........

IF she was pulling, down her elbow would go from properly bent (as she is) to extending SOMEWHAT straighter as she pulls down.........Not LOCKED OUT STRAIGHT........But STRAIGHTENING OUT a bit as she pulls DOWN and throws with I/R.........

Think "TAKE IT BACK and TURN IT UP THEN PULL IT DOWN FROM BEHIND AND THROUGH".........ALL ONE MOTION.......Take it back and up.......and pull it down and through.........

NOT AROUND THE HIP...........DOWN AND THROUGH........RIGHT PAST THE BACK THIGH.........

She can do it........She's got the talent........It's obvious............

Yes I know I must of told her 10 times smiling But for some reason she still skipped the first part every time. She does the first part when going to 3 or show-it most of the time but on this drill we did it about 25 times and each time I told her where to start it and even showed her but then she would start skipping it again. and it appears to me after watching so many slow motion videos and for me frame by frame that she needs help extending slightly. This drill is and always has been a struggle for her so I think I will be spending a lot more time on it. Trust me BM we are not intentionally skipping part of the drill. I think she just rushes through it. But that sidearm action is what I have been seeing in every video in drills sometimes her hand is under the ball. and you hit it she is not extending any she appears to hold the angle of the bend in her arm. I am still trying to figure that one out. But She does for some reason become a little mechanical when performing the drills until she has done them for a while. or a better word is stiff I guess

dmaegan,

The words "Nope", "Start Over", and "That's not it" work, too. ;) I've found that when an athlete misses the same thing over and over... that I am to blame, and I need to clearly define it. I have them repeat the instruction I want them to perform... back to me. If she keeps missing it... it's probably because she doesn't understand it... that's all. Remember, we only see what you post... which is this:

aonsyv.gif

If you BOTH watch this loop... hopefully you and HER both see that she:
  1. Blows by the starting point (hands at side, resting).... and instead goes from belly button to mid-backswing.
  2. Is leading the throw with the meaty part of her palm (more of a push)... as opposed to the pinky (more of a pull).

Like BM, says... no dramatic pauses. Go back to go forward... not back, stop, forward.

BM's post is really helpful... as I see a fair share of people from DFP that miss these finer points, too. Hell, I spent a solid 2 out of 5 hours in clinic today... showing BM's points above to 3 girls. In fact, I sorta chuckled when I got home and read it. Point being, don't feel like you're alone... lots of other future rockstars are learning the same tune.

Couple of points to keep in the back of your mind:

Make sure the wrist is not too tense... as that tension will creep upward (the first throw looks like that was the case).

I also see a lot of people rotating their torso clockwise to take the ball up & back... and the result is that they naturally counter rotate the torso during the throw. Don't do that, either. Your arm has joints... make those pesky parts do all the moving.

Have her work on it for a solid dose... and post another. Can't wait to see it!

I Do not know what to do I had her watch BM doing the drill, I showed it to her , I used every key word I can think of but in this drill resorts to the same thing everytime. Now The weird part is I can get her to do it full motion but in every case she has palm up at like7:30 then she leads pink and comes right across the front of her thigh But nothing I seem to say or do can get her to do it in the isolation drill I know what Your looking for, BM is looking for but she struggles with it. I had her watch the video and read his words, I read it to her. I know there is something she is not understanding but I can not for the life of me think of any other way to show it or put it. Her body just resorts to that :( Over the last year we have probably run it maybe 200 times and I can not remember anytime that she has done it right she trys it but eventually gets frustrated with it. Tonight we did it for about 20 minutes everytime I would remind her and when we watched the video it was the same thing she just said UHG...

Calgon take me away :)
