Part of it depends on what type of surface you're going to use it on, and whether you will be moving it or mounting it permanently somewhere.

Since I work at facilities open to the general public I have to be able to move the mats. I also have to have them last across many different girls. Both facilities I work at have turf so that adds a level of complication. Mats designed for a gym floor (usually all-rubber or with rubber backing) tend to slide around on turf. That's why I bought the Jennie Finch mat with the foam backing. (I actually have two.) They adhere to the turf underneath much better, although how well they adhere definitely depends on how old the turf is. I think there is another brand out now that also offers the backing for turf.

I also have a Club K mat, which is great on gym floors. All those mats have been pretty durable, although one of the Finch mats is a bit worn in one spot - I believe from someone "borrowing" it at the facility without my approval.
