Change up question for R Pauley or whoever.

Rick

I have noticed in your videos that you teach a change up that is along the lines of a push change. The one where you have the progressive drills with the crook in the arm. I also noticed that the video I see a very effective change up that I like a lot. It looks to be a cork screw change or a roll over change. I have been teaching my daughter this pitch instead of the flip change that she throws to slow in my opinion. Her fastball is 45 mph topping 47, Her change drops to 31 and I have seen hitters have time to be fooled and then readjust. When she gets the crock screw/ roll over change over its around 35-36 , But the difference is its not fluttering in at eye or stomach level it steadily dying as it moves toward the plate. Damn near unhittable for a 10 year old.

I guess im asking why do you have one change up in one video then I see Sarah throwing the roll over change. Do you have any progressive drills for this pitch or am I to assume its reverse trainging the arm by working the way up the arm circle with this pitch as well? Also is there any special grip she is using for this pitch as well. Id like to master this pitch because as I said when she is getting this pitch over its a beautiful thing!

Thanks for the video as I would have never had a clue this pitch existed, The PC in this area all teach the flip and teach HE as well, That's a different topic! If anyone has any answers other than Rick Im all ears. I just directed the question to Rick because they are his videos that im asking about!

Thanks for your help!

Papa-

my DD throws a Cu similar to Sarah's. We happened into in in trying to teach her a flip. Once we gave up on the flip and just went with it we found that it is really effective and is pretty common. The two main cues are felling her hand on the outside of the ball on release, and burying the ball in the palm. IF she can throw an fastball with the spin described in the I/R threads and can throw a drop ball then this is a natural progression to the outside of the ball. Everything is the same, just bury it in the palm and think touch the outside of the ball. You should see a nice drop curve spin and about a 20% speed reduction. So My DDs latest numbers are a FB/DB cruising between 47-49 and this CU is 39-41. Slow enough to throw off the timing but fast enough to prevent a reset. The cool thing about it is that it breaks a good amount and that all you have to do is bring it out of the palm and throw the same pitch with the fingers and you get a slightly offspeed pitch with break in it. So it gives my DD a high 40s, mid forties, high 30-s low 40s three speed capability. They are a little too tightly grouped speed wise right now, but I expect as she gets faster that the speeds will spread a little more and be really effective. We kind of stumbled on it but I love it now.

What JJ said.

Also... if you find there's still a bit of speed you want to cut out... it's most likely because she's not getting her fingers forward soon enough... and they are sorta whipping through the release. Firm up the wrist and get 'em forward.

In whip, max speed comes when release of the ball starts with the hand inside the ball. When you make the hand IR earlier, you miss the whip and the ball speed goes down.

Ok Ken (and JJ) sorry to be dense but can you describe this in terms of where the ball is facing. If the ball is facing up is that hand inside and when the ball is facing toward third more is that getting outside??

Ball/palm facing the body. So, with the fastball, the hand only rotates about a 1/4 turn from palm up at 9 o'clock, to palm out around release. With a change, the idea is to rotate the hand even more, and earlier, from palm up to palm in (or even facing back with the flip) at release. Hope that makes sense...

That is really helpful. I think that has been struggle DD has been having with change-up is trying to get whip and maintain arm position, but then being out of alignment at release. Although last night change up was right where it should be - so maybe she is finding that spot.
