Some of the best games that I have had the pleasure of watching my dd pitch were games where she didn't bring her changeup out until the 4th, 5th or even 6th innings. My dd moves the ball well from inside to outside and up to down. She has always had success getting 0-2 or 1-2 counts on batters and then throwing crappy pitches out of the strike zone in order to set up her go to or strikeout pitch. In the later innings of the game, she will lead out with a changeup, which no one is talking about in the dugout, and will catch the aggressive batters off guard that are trying not to get behind in the count. Most of her 4 and 5 pitch innings come during the second or third time through the batting order, where effective changeups cause weak grounders or lazy pop ups.

Completely agree about the change-up. You should be working on the change-up as much as every other pitch. Think about this: how often to the players go into the batting cages and work on hitting change-ups? About never! But they can hit the pitching machines "fastball" quite regularly, even when turned up to a high velocity. Combine that fact that some coaches erroneously teach their batters not to swing at change-ups unless they have two strikes on them and the pitchers with a good change-up will be very effective.

Change-up = The Great Equalizer

Mid West
HS team faced a low to mid 60's pitcher tonight.
First couple innings were a little rough, but when the girls figured her out it was over for them. Final score was 11-2, us. Speed doesn't do it alone. She didn't throw a single change up all game! Stupid coaching IMO
