Left handed change-up grip for small hands......

Do the grips change for the lefty as the fast ball grip does? My DD just wants to play around with a few things over the holidays and I told her I would look up a simple change up for her. I have been looking at grips on here and youtube, but want to make sure I show her the correct positioning for a lefty.

She has small hands also. I did check out the grip thread, but didn't see much in the way of lefty grips.

We are looking for the simplest change up that doesn't require much pitching style change-just grip. If this is possible. If it isn't-it is fine to say so.

Thanks in advance for the simplest answer possible and any visuals. :)

Remind me how the fastball grip changes for a lefty.

I think the palm-ball grip works well for small hands (i.e., ball crammed as far into the palm as possible with all four fingers on same side spread very slightly).

Nice, from a lefty held in the right hand, and a huge hand at that. GG my dd is a lefty and aside from throwing with the wrong arm, it is all the same. If the hand is really small a 2 seam approach might help to get more fingers on seams.

From what we were taught a fast ball-- the right handed batter will see a "c" whereas the lefty will see a backwards "c" under there fingers.

I use a backwards C for righties. Try both and I think you/she will find the ring finger has a better feel on the seam.

I'm sure there are as many opinions about grip as anything, but I think how the ball is released is probably more important.

I did MK see the horseshoe, but honestly just couldn't wrap my brain around all of the directions AND I really just want something that involves minimal change to what she is already doing. Plus it doesn't give directions for the lefty grip. This is just something we want to play around with over our break, so I would probably mess up anything other than just a grip that I could show her a pic of. I def. don't want to do that.

I showed her yesterday how to change the speed a bit by palming. But I think most people would call that off speed rather than a change.

My DD started with a circle change but couldn't get it right so PC introduced the flip change. One thing nice about the flip is the grip is essentially the same as her four seam fastball, the only change in mechanics is you start the internal rotation early (at 9:00 ball to the ground vs. palm to the sky) which effectively kills the arm whip taking about 25% off the speed of the pitch. To learn the change-up, start her out throwing it into to a bucket about 15 feet away and keep moving the bucket back as she gets more accurate. Probably take several weeks of practices to get accurate. Only then should you pitch the full windmill pitch. Now that she is learning a change-up, I would buy a radar gun so you can keep track of the difference in speed which is critical to the effectiveness of the pitch. Most young kids throw their c/u too fast or there is a huge arc in the pitch IME. Lastly, the c/u should have the same mechanics as her fastball, don't slow down the arm circle to make the pitch slower. If she can get proficient with her c/u, she will be very good at the 10U & 12U level.
