I know this shouldn't be rushed. But my daughter is finally getting a chance to pitch. All the girls that start in the games are warmed up prior and 1 or 2 more that have been doing lessons a while. Now before anyone goes off on a rant, I KNOW she should warm up properly. But, I don't want to say, no you can't pitch if you didn't warm up for 30 minutes properly like the starters. I KNOW this will lead to injury if she pitches without warming up.

Basically they seem to just let 2-3 other girls from each team pitch an inning after the starters have 3 innings. So I am going to try and get as much heads up and stress warming up and pull her to the side if I can without making too much drama or looking like I am trying to tell the coach what to do.

But my question is, is there a quicker way to get somewhat warmed up? Is there anything she can do in the dugout to get somewhat warmed up? She def. pitches better and harder if warmed up as does anyone.

Any suggestions would be great! Thanks so much!

Right Here For Now
We always warm up all of our pitchers before the first game of the day in a tournament. Before each subsequent game we will warm up the two we plan on using that game. When the starter needs relieved, if it's a planned replacement, we have the replacement go out with a catcher behind the dugout and throw some pitches during our at bat. If the starter is struggling and needs replaced mid-inning, at least the new pitcher is not going in completely cold since she warmed up before the game. As far as in the dugout, some of our pitchers will go to the very end and just keep stretching their arms and shoulders. Others will just put their pitching arm in the sleeve of a sweatshirt or jacket to keep their arm warm and loose. I had 1pitcher that used a small 1 pound walking weight and slowly did 2-3 arm circles during our at bat. It all depends on the girl, what their PC advises and what they feel they need. If your DD has a PC, talk to them and see what they suggest.

Have her throw right before you even take her to the field. A pre-warm up is much better than no warm up. To this day mine still does it. Throw hard, get any nerves out of the way and then enjoy the ride to the park.

30 minute warm ups are probably 20 minutes too long and only add more stress and usage to the body. When my dd is in hurry up mode she goes right to full arm circles and just stepping, starting out slow and not full speed gradually working her way faster. Once she is comfortable she begins actual pitching motion with her leap/drag.

By using full circle and no isolation moves she warms everything up at the same time.

Warming up is a personal thing and I do not think there should be a set time put on it. On the flip side I think a pitcher should be ready at all times. There is always time between innings when either sitting as a sub or just maybe at the bottome of the batting order. Most teams have already warmed up 45 min to an Hour before a game anyway.Generally everything but the act of pitching is ready to go. Most can get at least 10 or 20 balls pitched as long as its not a 3 up and 3 down inning.

Are you a coach? I was wondering how you can pull her to the side and warm her up? Also, is she in the game or on the bench? If she is on the bench, she could ask the coach to tell her, if he plans to pitch her, so that she can warm up. Have her jog down the foul lines, to keep her legs warmed up, too.

My bet is that the coach isn't warming up the relievers, prior to the game.

I think we have all been here with are DDs.

My solution was what abbygale suggested. Warm-up her up yourself before the Team pre-game starts. Either do it a home before you go to the field or arrive at the field a lit bit early.

Arrive at the field early shows the coach she is ready so I like this better but it depended on our schedule which one she did.

As a coach, my procedure was always to sit a pitcher from the field, the inning prior that I plan to use her. That way, she can warm-up and get mentally prepared to enter the game.

Also solves another problem of substitutions/bench time - which is always a sensitive issue with parents, especially. If your kid sits an inning in advance of taking the circle, there is usually no squawking about that. (wink)

You warm up right before you throw. You warm up to the point your throwing arm and shoulder are PERSPIRING. tHEN YOU PUT A JACKET OVER THEM and keep them warm. Young ladies do not like to perspire but if they do not warm up to that point, they risk injury to the shoulder and/or arm.
