What about the Schmidt girl from LSU, wasn't she considered a junkballer? Seems like she topped out just over 60 but her breaking stuff was mid/low 50's.

......unless they are >60 which is rare.. .

>60 "rare",.....WRONG,....you get on the national scene at 16U and above and go to exposure camps and you will see plentiful 58-62 MPH pitchers.

Now I feel >65 IS rare. But it's magical to witness......

I've got no problems finding a travel team(s).. .

A "travel team" is like an iPad - everyone's got one but everyone who has one thinks they are unique.... Jeesh.....

Now I am not trying to be argumentative here. I am just trying to prepare you for that ceiling you eventually will hit IF you are trying to have DD make it to the D1 level at 55mph. If you are not caught up in D1-D3 levels then don't worry about the speed thing too much. There are plenty of opportunities for great control pitchers with "junk" out there. And like many here will tell you, if it is not your DD's MUST-HAVE dream to play for Alabama then don't worry about it.... Get her on a good exposure team that WILL respect her capabilities and HS will be a quickly forgotten phantasm......

Watched the injured starter from Florida(I Believe)Last year during the WCWS and healthy she would normally throw 65+ but due to the injury was in the 57-58 range and did great with movement. The announcers were raving at how she adapted so even at the top levels a good movement can keep the rotation off balance.Im sure she still would have liked being able to throw heat. But remained very affective in the super regonals.

I dont care how fast you can throw, the hitters will take you to the wall by the third inning. Why? Because of the way they are taught to hit. Coaches and instructors use pitching machines to train hitters. They virtually all do it the same way:fast, faster and faster than that. They even throw in the occassional slow cvhange up. Hitters can be trained to deal with that.

Speed, by itself, is not a tactic. However, the intelligent use of multiple speeds is most definitely tactical pitching. If you have fast, slow and one or two speeds in between, AND you bounce from one speed to the next trying to nopt throw two in a row at the same speed, you will own their entire line up. Why? Because unless the hitters can be trained to read minds, THEY NEVER KNOW WHEN TO DO THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN HITTING ; when to pull the trigger and start their swing.

Intelligent use of different speeds is just one of many tactics a pitcher can use to destroy a hitters timing.

Yeah they will call you a junk baller. A whole lot of trophies makes that very easy to live with. :)

Absolutely.. no one throws it by anyone anymore unless they are >60 which is rare..

I've got no problems finding a travel team(s).. they are lining up because they know her.. at least the ones who aren't hammerheads.. we have been mercenaries for a couple seasons now.

The issue in this particular case is with school ball.. coach doesn't really know her from travel and she got cut in favor of 2 girls who throw a little harder (upper 50s vs lower 50s) but with zero movement. DD and her teams have clobbered these girls in travel.. unfortunately I can't go shopping for a new team w/o putting a for sale sign on my house, so in this case I've gotta work with what I have. It's frustrating because I know DD is much more effective (and the only one of the three who can also hit worth a damn). Would have no problem getting cut if the other girls were better, but it isn't even close.

Good hitters don't get cut. Unless we're talking about a pitcher of the dominant, shutdown variety, she needs to have a varied skill set. Now that you know what the HS coach is looking for, you can help her to prepare for that next spring.

I should clarify.. 60+ is rare at her level.. first year 14U.. yes at 16U you are correct 60+ is reasonable.. but no one is chucking that in Middle School w/o being something really special..

I could care less about college at this point.. but I would find it difficult nee impossible to get on a college team if you can't get on a high school team.

yes.. well Middle School.. DD is in 8th grade.. the other 2 are YOUNGER.. which compounds my issue..

Your dd it in 8th grade, throws 60 when she wants to, and has amazing movement on her pitches and she got cut because there are 2 other girls in her school who throw harder?

Where the heck do you live, our HS hasn't had a 60 MPH pitcher in years, and we are a fairly successful program.

we are in upstate NY.. pretty big district. and like I said she has hit 60 but most of her stuff is low 50s.. The other 2 are more consistently upper 50s.
