Has anyone compared BA when the AB ends on an 0-0 count(1st pitch) as compared to BA where the AB ends on all other counts?

Ted Williams in his book and video on the "Science of Hitting" encourages hitters to not swing at the first pitch so they can get a better look at what the pitcher has. I have never been one to advocate this philosophy.

When I call pitches, if the first pitch is a strike, it will probably be the best pitch you will see in that at bat...

I guess I wasn’t clear what I was asking for. I have some data for amateur baseball and was looking for data on SB. Please see =====> View attachment aggressive1b.pdf

There are 3 columns I was looking at. 1st Pitch BA, Non 1st Pitch BA, and Overall BA. From what I can tell, putting that 1st pitch in play is a lot more successful than not.

Not softball related, but interesting read in the attached link. From my experience, softball is very similar. Pitcher's goal is to get ahead in the count. Hitter's goal should be to not get behind in the count. However, just like anything else, there is a lot of individuality in these stats.

From our team's pitching stats (12U TB)...

BAA (Batting Average Against) .180
FPSH% (First Pitch Strike Hit %) .147

Being that FPSH% is included in the overall BAA, this tells me that the BAA is much higher after the first strike. Than again, my logic could be really flawed.

Wish that the NCAA kept these stats like MLB does. It would help us see just how similar softball and baseball really are. My guess is that you'd see similar patterns in softball that you see in MLB, but until we have those numbers, we don't know.

I've only seen my DD play 3 games (DIII). I would hate to be a pitcher. It was a tight strike zone. I mean really tight. My DD has always been a 'not taking a 1st strike' hitter but, in college I told her it seems she can be a little more selective. From the limited games I've seen the pitcher had to pretty much throw it down the middle to get a called strike. I also spoke to the starting pitchers dad and asked him if this was the type of strike zone that you have seen so far(last year) and he said yes. I'll keep an eye on this and report back.

I believe it was first pitch of your first ab. After that he mixed up.

My DD had to make some major adjustments going from NJCAA to SEC. She was really used to getting the front corner with her 2 seam and it just does not get called in the SEC.
