As a general rule it is better to practice against faster pitching than adjust to slower pitching.

No reason to be pitching the ball 70 mph at them though. Also we have faced pitchers that have thrown significantly faster than the other pitchers, sometimes it is better just to ignore their speed and hope for the best.

Practice at 3 speeds. Use either a machine, front toss, or an actual pitcher. Assign a number that represents the speed. A "1" is fast, a "2" is average, and a "3" is slow.... When we see the pitcher warm up, we'll judge her with the radar guns and look for tells on her pitches. The only difference in our preparation based on the number assignment is when we stretch out in the load, and our placement in the box.

BUT... If you work on it it will get better. I really like Coach James plan. We tried working on holding the coil and coiling forward. That helped.

Know what worked best? Discouraging all the " I hate slow pitching, I can't hit it" talk in the dugout. It's baloney but they convince themselves of it.

Same here we practice 2 speeds but still struggle with the shower pitching. Will it get better with age? She is 11.

Great question...

So I'll annoy myself (and probably others) by answering a question with a question...

How do you teach timing? This really is the crux of the matter...

What are you folks doing to teach timing?

One of the things we have done recently is to use a machine, and have the girls move progressively closer, focusing on quickness. At a certain point, they then start moving progressively further away while maintaining the same launch quickness. The lesson being to maintain the explosiveness of their swing and be in control of their launch timing - react to the ball, not the pitcher. As they move back to the furthest stations, the cue is to wait as long as possible to launch.

In cages I pitch to the girls. We try to get in as many reps as we can in about an hour- to an hour and a half . Generally its softtoss, with softballs, then tennis balls. Then coach pitch and machine pitch. I tend to like more of the coach pitching to the girls. We have a lot more fun with it.
