Ive got a player that's been with me for a few years. In BP, off a tee, machine, soft , and front toss her swing is beautiful. Mechanics are perfect while shes peppering the back of the cage. Come game time and she is the complete opposite bat drag, legs collapsing, casting. Her swing is a complete 180 from BP. How do you work on problems that only are present in a game? I'm at my wits end with this one. It completely baffles me why her game swing is so god awful but her BP swing is perfect.

Does she have a plan when she gets to the plate or is she just trying to make contact? Maybe tell her you want her to pull the ball to LF or something like that. See if that gets her concentrating on something else and gets her out of her own way.

Show her video of both and let her see for herself. Tell her if she wants the results she is getting in the cage...she will have to swing like she does in the cage. Remind her that no one can make that happen but her.

Is she nervous at bat? Maybe focus on pre- at bat routine to help use the nervous energy to her favor. She may not admit the nerves but if you have clear focus points on deck and getting into the box, work the into routine on tee, cages, etc, then her practice swings will eventually become her game swings.

Not an expert but....that was me.

What age? My 12U DD is the same way. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out what was wrong, and when I asked her what was different she would reply with the ever-so-helpful "I don't know." She went 0-fer the entire spring season in 2014. What I finally got out of her, after many, many questions was that she couldn't tell live pitching balls and strikes. Cage, front toss, tee - she just assumed strikes. Live pitching, she was just baffled. I forced her to bunt every at bat after that (being HC has some perks), which helped some. She is still struggling, though.

These are great replies thank you but Ive tried each already lol. We started with film and showing her the difference. Ive tried getting her into a routine with a focal and verbal points, she also notoriously rips ball foul down the 3rd baseline at me so Ive tried pushing patience and go to right field. I even pushed "use your imagination and picture the cage walls around you when your hitting. Like I said this has been going on for a few years. Thats why Im here. I am just at a loss now. Shes 18U now and this is her last year so I want her to enjoy it but this is my last chance to fix this. So damn frustrated.

Sounds to me like she is having trouble with pitch recognition. In my opinion, the more time she can spend in a batter's box, the better. Do you know any pitcher's? If so, ask if she can stand in the batter's box while they are practicing. Don't have her swing. Just have her watch and time the pitches, and then start her swing, only to 'check' it. Have the pitcher go through her entire routine. Change speeds. Change locations. Etc. Good luck!

I never have the girls hit off of a machine. It builds false results and doesn't transfer to the field. But, front toss should.
