Learnin,

In a live game situation, there is a human trying to get your kid out. Does a tee ever try to make your kid put a poor swing on a ball? Does a machine just feed the same pitch at the same speed and allow your kid to perfect her swing mechanics?

What is a pitcher trying to do? She is trying to make the hitter miss, miss-hit, swing off balance, chase or otherwise look both stupid and out...NOT mechanically perfect. A tee and a (fixed speed) machine will never do this. Those devices allow the hitter to literally tee off. It is relatively easy to perfect tee mechanics compared to live game battles.

I would advise you based on your OP to put less emphasis on the perfect tee swing and feed the hitter more front toss **with varying spins, speeds, locations and deception.** When you do this, take note. Does she still have the awesome cage-queen mechanics or do the swings vary more like you see in a live game?

"Practice more like you play." It is one way to improve what is troubling you.

Good luck!

I like the thinking on this one. Its an area I didnt even consider. Could you expand on the YesYesNo? Thank you.I have inquired about her eyes. She wears contacts.

Call it a "hitter's mentality". Change the mindset so that the decision to swing is already made (i.e., before the pitch, before the game, from now on) and the only decision that sometime needs to made on a pitch is to stop if the eyes read that its a bad pitch. For many, this approach involves a simpler and less stressful decision and helps them feel more confident, particularly when it leads to success.

You can practice it with a tee, side toss, front toss etc. by having them swing at everything and calling out stop on random pitches before having them try it during BP/live pitching.

On every pitch, Mig gets the swing process started before he knows the location. The thought is always "hit the ball"...until it's read as being out of the zone. He doesn't have time to think "is this one to hit?..." and then start the swing process.

One thing I talk a lot about with my DD and her teammates is "hitting zone". When they are hitting front toss without a plate on the ground, they aren't thinking about the "strike zone", only whether they can hit it - their "hitting zone". That's the attitude I want them to take in the box. Let the pitcher worry about the "strike zone". EXPECT that every pitch is one to hit, and if it is...HIT IT

Thanks for your response. We vary our cage tools. We hit off t's every bp and we alternate between machine and front toss every week. I like to do both because they see the speed from the machines I cant provide, and different locations, releases, speeds, arm speed that I can provide with front toss. She looks great in anything we do at BP.

Why is it about the coach? In all honesty, who cares about what the coach is feeling, really...? It is about the players. And you can't save them from failing their whole lives by intervening.

Are you really that dense? It (the issue at hand) is not about the coach, but this thread is about the coach being frustrated at being unable to help. You know, because he cares about his player. How much easier it would be for us to watch a struggling girl and say, "Oh well, we can't save them from themselves," and move on.

I know you think you're being all philosophical and advocating an altruistic approach, but you assume too much (big surprise) and simply ignore whatever doesn't fit your preconceived ideas (another huge surprise).

Apologies to the rest of you for feeding the troll. Just can't stand it when someone climbs up on their high horse and starts preaching.

I don't think anyone mentioned this but make sure during front toss you don't throw a strike every time. I've read that you shouldn't throw more than 3 strikes in a row. So along with the other great advice, make her be smart at the plate during practice. I give DD situations when doing front toss, so she takes her time, visualizes it, and then tries to execute her routine and plan once in the box. If you can get her in a feeling of pressure as much as possible in practice, it will help in the game. Our team ends batting practice by dividing the girls into groups and they compete at the plate...they take it very seriously and want their group to win. I've heard our coaches telling them (and mine) to relax even when under this "practice" pressure.
