I'd like to improve DD's ball tracking abilities to help her hit the ball better.
What drills do the gurus recommend to improve this?

Putting different colored dots or strips on some balls seem to work OK.

You can either have her call out the color of each ball(numbers work too) or only hit the blue ones when pitching to her.

(Strips are easier to see but she will be able to start picking up the spin of the ball better.)

IMO, while common advice, this is exactly what you don't want to do.

if this is not what should be done, then what is your advise?

Avoid drills that encourage a hard focus ... which will make hitting more difficult. Instead use drills that encourage a relaxed open focus. An example follows.

if I may suggest something.

I call the visual library.

FRONT TOSS. Work each zone, repeatedly, not randomly.

Work a particular zone, over and over, then switch to another.

This will build up her visual library, and she will begin to recognize pitches, and their location sooner and sooner.

I use this same method, for outfielders, using a pitching machine, and cones, shooting hundreds of fly balls, enabling the girls to build on their visual library, their visual MEMORY .

Low and outside
Have her get in the habit of watching every pitch all the way to the catcher's glove, whether she swings at it or not. Practice it with short-toss drills. Do soft toss using two balls at a time. When both balls are in the air call out "top" or "bottom" and have her hit that ball.
