To address what I think is the core of the original question, if all you're really good at is laying down a sacrifice bunt, not you won't be very valuable to a travel team. They want kids who can hit, especially these days. They expect any player to be able to lay down the sac bunt if called for, so it's not a particularly attractive skill.

Agreed. Bunting is just another tool. A player who can ONLY bunt is usually an easy out. A girl who can bunt, drag slap, or pop one into the OF is a much bigger threat, especially if she can run like the wind.

My DD's team this past summer played in a couple of tournaments that included some skills challenges. For bunting challenges - which included distance and direction control - our best competitors were also some of our most powerful hitters, though maybe not the fastest runners. It's about bat control.
