    How to handle...

I'll bet she gets it in the car on the way home, at home, when she's practicing with him alone, etc. If this team was set up by an organization, then go to the head of the organization and make sure he/she is present during the AC's meeting with the HC. Also make sure that the organization...

    Coaching Issues

One way you can get around all of the title issues it to announce a "re-set" after fall ball is complete. You can say that the the fall tournaments were an evaluation period to assess the players and team, including coaches, and now roles and duties will be assigned. You can also add that since...

Best, or saddest, comment made by your DD...

Lozza Yes, we talked about this with DD, but we don't think this is the best option right now. The team was a young, developing team, with only 2 girls having played TB before so we (DD) knew what the season was going to be like. Many of the girls are "aging up" so we have to find new players -...

Best, or saddest, comment made by your DD...

After another weekend of losing more than winning, final team meeting for the tournament always ends in a team cheer. As you can expect the cheer was half hearted. Assistant coach said "Boy that was weak!" and DD replies "What's weak is losing every weekend and no one cares."

    Please contribute to coaching details

With runners on and a bunt/steal situation, make sure your infielders move to their respective spots as soon as the batter shows bunt. This way, then the batter pulls back to hit/slap, she knows where your defenders are so she doesn't hit it to them.

    My first parent coach confrontation

A coach's first priority, especially at the younger ages and lower levels of ability, is to ensure the safety of the kids. Although "hustle", "paying attention" and "instinct" are not quantifiable as are BA, hits allowed, etc., the coach is the one who is there and observes the player and has...

    Coach adding players...???

Another possibility is that the coach is preparing for next year. Is the team a mix of 11's and 12's? Is the coach staying at 12U or moving to 14U next year? What ages are the girls that are being added? What about team finances - are the extra players paying a full fee or a reduced rate? Has...

What's the most important question to ask the coach of a potential team for your DD?

I would ask the opposing teams' parents/coaches what they thought of said coach, especially if I couldn't attend games/practices to see how that coach acted, and interacted with the players and parents. Also, trust your gut instinct - it's called that for a reason.

What to do in this situation?

The only time I look at the clock is if we are playing the next game and I have to make sure I get my next game's pitcher plenty of time to warm up. Otherwise, the clock is only there to allow all of the tournament games to be played.

    Stealing signs?

I don't have a problem with the kids stealing the signs; I do have a problem when the adult coaches do it.

    Parents and their "star"

They should be called "practice" or "pre-season practice" and leave it at that. Within the designated practice time, there should be multiple stations with a coach/trainer at each, both offensive and defensive. Split the girls up into groups that are different at each practice and have them...

Product review: A Coach's Guide to Training Catchers DVD

As a former baseball catcher, I wish this DVD was available when I was playing. I teach my catcher's from Dave's techniques, and I even have DD (not a catcher) notice other team's catchers who obviously follow the instructions from the DVD. I highly recommend this DVD.

    2011 RocketTech vs 2011 CF4 Insane

I agree with dbias about the bending. I borrowed a players' composite bat last fall to hit fly balls to them, and that was the first thing I noticed - that the bat felt like it was bending. I had to swing harder to hit it as far as I wanted. I then got a non-composite bat and it seemed normal to...

    Foul tip

No, only if it is, in the umpires opinion, a foul ball above the player's heads. I think the definition of a foul tip is a direct route to the catchers glove, or some sort of language like that. If it is a little pop up above the batter's head, again a judgement call by the ump, but most likely...

    Infield fly rule

Not entirely correct, but close. It is a judgement call by the ump as to the "infield area". If the ump thinks that an infielder could catch it (or not) then the IFR is called (or not) - it's a judgement call rather than where the ball is. Also, the batter is out, but the ball IS NOT dead - any...

    How Do You Handle This..........

I do not think you should leave the team as that sends not only a bad message to your daughter, but she and you made a commitment to the team, including the families. Are the other 3 players who did not get to play also considering leaving? What if you were on the other end - a true starter, and...

    1st Basemen Question

I have a completely different take on this - it depends on where the throw is. If you have 1B use Amy's method of back to the line (i.e. heels on the line), what happens if the throw is in foul territory? They have a really hard time twisting to catch the ball, let alone try to make a tag. Also...

COACH, I could use some segestions

Topdog - I don't understand why you asking the coach if she's on the team or not constitutes being "done there....forever"? To me, that would indicate that you are in the wrong organization no matter if she's on the team or not. If that's the type of organization that they run, I'd leave without...

COACH, I could use some segestions

The coach is checking to see which player she is before making the offer - the one during tryouts or the one that has no team and is trying to impress. He has already stated to her in front of you that she did not "bring it" during tryouts, and that is why she was not on the team originally...

    Throwmax training aid

DD got one in the fall of 2009 when she started playing softball, initially to help with the overhand throw. After she wanted to pitch, it was useful in correcting the "arm curl" follow through. It got to the point that it was only used sparingly - 10-12 pitches per practice - because she like...
