Front of base or split the bag for tags?

Steals or any balls coming in and it's a tag play. I focus on the ball coming in and not reaching for it (still working on it for some that is coming from rec). I tell them to have the ball travel as long as it can.

Front of base or split the bag for tags?

Because throws have not always been consistent, I have always had infielders position themselves in front of the base facing the throw and then, in midthrow, quick feet work turn toward the runner and receive the throw in front of the base for a tag. I do this so they can adjust with the throw...

What is the best team website at an affordable cost

I'm not looking for a flashy website. I am looking for something where other people can go to find information about our team or to contact us. That's it. I've had a couple of teams say they "looked" for us but couldn't find any information.

Was she out of line, or was I?

No matter how "creative" you got, it's not your role or responsibility to speak to the umpire. As a parent, you job is to encourage and use positive support for the players....that's it. Just because you do not like to hear that you were wrong to even say anything to the umpire, doesn't mean...

Was she out of line, or was I?

I'm not going to answer right or wrong about the call but, no matter what, YOU were out of line for saying ANYTHING. Not your job to speak up or out to the umpire. As a coach, if my parents spoke out (I don't care if the umpire was right or wrong) I would strongly suggest the parent to be...

What is the best team website at an affordable cost

Because we've seen so many talented girls leave our community for other comp organizations that are 30+ minutes away, I decided to try and start one that stems from our rec program. We started with a 12U last year but we were still hidden. This year, we are more exposed and have had people ask...

    Helping a team focus

Team Meeting......set expectations. Question #1 - What do you want to achieve? Question #2 - What do you need to do to achieve this? Question #3 - Are you willing to do it? Now, I'm a big fan of effort points which gives positive points for doing something they are in control of (i.e...

Joe Madden's view on Travel Baseball vs the multi sport athlete.

I agree. When my daughter played on another team during the summer (June and July), I can tell the other players were just exhausted. I asked a lot of the parents if they take a break from softball and they looked at me as if they didn't understand what I was saying. Then they slowly said...

Joe Madden's view on Travel Baseball vs the multi sport athlete.

Believe me....I would love to NOT start until 14U but the rec is not good over here. There are only 2 teams. If more kids participated at the rec level, there would be a lot more teams and they can even have divisions (by skill level). Soccer does this at the lower levels and it is really...

Joe Madden's view on Travel Baseball vs the multi sport athlete.

My daughters are also in soccer....believe me, I know it's in all sports. We are lucky to have soccer coaches believe that they do not need to be year round in soccer and actually have a start/stop point in their season. School is absolutely #1 in our family. If your grades are not there...

Joe Madden's view on Travel Baseball vs the multi sport athlete.

If parents said "you will only play until the end of July", I'm sure the kids will be fine. A parent needs to parent and not put the decision on the kids all the time either. I believe that a child's season should not be as long or longer than a professional season (i.e. MLB). I think that if...

Joe Madden's view on Travel Baseball vs the multi sport athlete.

Not when they were young. So, all the kids that love multiple sports and are good at it are ultra-elite???? Are you kidding me??? No...it's called be allowed to play sports they are interested in because they are KIDS!

But....but....but....you HAVE to specialize to get a scholarship, right? (Sarcasm) If the only reason why kids are playing softball is to get a scholarship, then we are doing them an injustice. I wish travel ball was not allowed until 14U because it gives kids more time to be kids and by the...

Almost 100% of Womens Soccer National team...multi sport athletes.

Joe Madden's view on Travel Baseball vs the multi sport athlete.

To you and other softball parents hoping for a college scholarship. I still see a lot of advantages to being a multi sport athlete. I like my team to stop playing by a certain part of the year to do another activity. I don't see any research that suggest young kids should specialize. If...

Joe Madden's view on Travel Baseball vs the multi sport athlete.

Jennie Finch was a 3-sport varsity athlete in high school and captain of all 3 teams. It's possible. I have a 12 year old on 2 comp teams (1 soccer and 1 softball). We do not...intentionally.....put her on the highest level teams because the commitment is too long (longer than an MLB season)...

Bucket Dad's frustration with the new team

I would create a warm-up routine that is thorough when she has time and one that is short and efficient when she doesn't. To prevent injury, I would recommend not doing all of her pitches until she is probably warmed which could be in between innings.

    Partial Scholarship. Can it increase?

As a verbal offer, the coaches will say "all 4 years" but it's a year to year basis. In most cases, it remains the same and in some cases it can go up or even get taken away. In my case, I had tuition and books covered and eventually got more to cover living expenses but it took a lot of hard...

    Can you afford it?

I can afford it but do I see spending that much money when I feel there are other solutions.....no. Until there are no other solutions, I won't pay that much money.

    Bunt coverages....?

No runner on or runner on 1st base: 1B & 3B crashes, 2B covers 1st base, SS covers 2nd base...pitcher or 3B goes back to cover 3B (whoever didn't get the bunt) while LF hovers over 3B just in case. I always prefer to have a back up to all bases and outfield only comes in if they have to...
