As signing day approaches, we received an email from DD's college coach requesting all 2017 signees report for the second session of summer school (July 3 - Aug 10). While I think this is a great way to get the players on campus to get a few classes under their belts and to become acclimated to college life before the masses show up in September, it presents some problems for her TB team - she will miss Nationals.

Not sure how many college coaches do this, but I know of several 2016 players that did the same thing this year. Something to keep in mind when your DD is a senior or you are an 18U TB coach putting together a team.

This is pretty common and gets players off on the right foot. She will not just take classes but will also have access to the athletic facilities. As to Nationals, the only ones she needs to ponder are in early June 2018 in OKC. :)

Thanks for the info.

The college coaches don't spend a lot of time worrying your DD's travel team.

Sorry if my post was vague. I was referring to TB coaches who are putting together a team to make a run at 18U Nationals, who unexpectedly lose key players to college early enrollment.

This is why my TB team does not go down the chasing nationals route. We are a showcase team pure and simple. It is all about getting players into the right college program. If a national tourney gives us some quality reps and is in a great location we may go. But those tournaments in and of themselves do nothing to help us accomplish our mission.

DD is doing the D3 route so not too much worry about this but she will be taking a couple of basics this summer to possibly be done with 21 hours of college by the time she starts (already has 15 - possibly 17 if labs count). Anyway, while it's beneficial to players, I feel for the parents because that shortens that last summer before they are off to college. :(

There is a girl on DD's team that just played her last TB game on Sunday. She is going on her official visit during our last showcase, early graduating this semester and then enrolling at her future school for the spring semester. She will be able to practice with the team, but not suit up for games though. She will be able to get a full semester done. I am guessing this will serve as her red shirt year. Great for her, but not so great for our team this summer.

Is the college coach against players playing TB in the summer if they are still eligible?

While it will shorten her last TB season, it will also save us some $$$ not having to go to CO, or CA this year!!!

Nationals is a big deal to TB coaches and they do their best to instill in the team.
Once your DD enters college, she won't really care if her TB team qualified or where they finished.
Once team activities begin at the college level, it is a completely different mindset.
In our area there are a couple teams who play local only at 18U so the girls can get reps
before embarking on the college journey.

Like RISEBALL we are a showcase team, we qualified for nationals at 16U but declined as
it was not our goal. We played ASA for the competition, not for the dream of spending thousands
od $$ on a trip to nationals
