    Again, the number system???

Typically I've seen that the coach will have a sheet with columns for the different types of pitches and randomly generated numbers. You have a mini sheet on your wrist so you can take the number and decode it to whatever pitch was called. Coach crosses off the number so it's never used again...

What are some good drills to work on reaction times?

You may want to try a pre-pitch routine like a creep step. Some move forward in small steps, some move in place, some do a real small hop as the pitch crosses home plate so that as the ball is being hit they are just landing on the balls of their feet. I realize college softball just ended...

    breaking in a catcher's mitt

I noticed a similar thing with the A2000. I know the leather will last (my A200 lasted the better part of a decade), but in the meantime it does seem a bit 'slick'. Nice catch, as she does cinch that thing down quite often. I'll have her try it and see if it helps. Her hand should be big...

Proven long toss drills for catchers

I haven't seen the youtube clips but the dvd does go into good detail specifically how he wants to long toss and the progression. It's not simply working back and letting it rip every time. As far as throwing mechanics, I don't recall him going into details very much. I haven't looked at it in...

Proven long toss drills for catchers

FWIW I have the DVD and he has Mike Lieberthal as one of the guys actually demonstrating the long toss portion. See the 4th paragraph: Jaeger Sports

    breaking in a catcher's mitt

She just finished 9th grade.. 14/15? She can definitely hold her own though. She really wants the glove to work because the family spent a good amount of money for the glove. Chaz, I think it may be an earlier model, more like this: Amazon.com: Wilson A2000 ZCM 33" Fastpitch Softball Catchers...

    breaking in a catcher's mitt

Thanks for the suggestions guys (and gals). She actually has med-large hands as they're are big if not slightly bigger than mine and I just measured mine at 7" middle finger to wrist. I actually thought ahead to ask why she had her fingers that way and she replied that there were 3 slots for 3...

    breaking in a catcher's mitt

Do you guys have a preferred way to break in a deep pocket for a fastpitch catcher's mitt? The other day one of the players asked what was wrong as she kept having balls pop out of her mitt. It's a season old Wilson A2000 and her dad had been pounding it in the pocket and heel to soften it...

Outfield - Where to throw the ball

I like what SweetLou wrote and can stress that if you have the outfielders actually think about where they need to throw BEFORE the ball is hit it should make it easier. While practicing live situations, you can ask the outfielders where they're going before you hit the balls to them to get...

    The glove flip

just saw this play and thought of this thread. here's your video example! Baseball Video Highlights & Clips | PHI@SD: Hamels makes nice flip with glove for the out - Video | MLB.com: Multimedia 2nd baseman to 1st: Baseball Video Highlights & Clips | SD@CIN: Cairo makes a nice flip to retire...

Did anyone see the Tenn vs Auburn game?

Btw call me sadistic, but I was chuckling when the Tenn C hit the batter on the attempted steal. Their obligation to get out of the way, no hesitation. See runner go, throw. Love it.

Did anyone see the Tenn vs Auburn game?

I happened to see it live and like Steve I thought I saw the runner stutter step just before the collision. I sawthe C popping out from behind the batter about the time the runner starts to stutter step or at least start to slow down (looking ~0:35). I'm not saying it wasn't flagarant, but I...

    BP without a cage

Honesly haven't coached that young... maybe need to run a station per coach so they're supervised. Instead of doing the windmill, you could start them with front toss so the coaches are more accurate and the girls can get some confidence. We put girls in the infield to get some work in, but in...

    BP without a cage

We do a setup similar to the one KevinC suggested: 2 live hitters (screen between the two hitters), bunt station, soft toss in a net. Usually ends up having 5/6 people in, 8/9 in the field. We usually go 8-10 cuts and rotate individuals rather than groups. They know to rotate across the...

Making the Tag at Home Plate Without Getting Hurt

As for combating players trying to take out your C, if she gets into a good position, she'll be able to minimize injury. If she puts a good lick on the incoming runner, I'm guessing word will spread not to do that anymore =) Think football (get lower than the other person).
