The whole seat belt argument falls flat as it is a bit simplistic and is really an apples to oranges comparison. I think the more appropriate comparison is the use/non-use of motorcycle helmets in locations where they are not mandated. Interestingly when given the choice the vast majority still wear them even when not mandated.

There are other options besides making everyone wear masks.

In our district, some girls do take the mask off for HS and put it back on for travel. Why? The Dudley is a dead ball, and the composition of our fields is sandy. As I have posted, the only players I have ever seen hit with a ball in 15 years were an outfielder, a pitcher backing up home that was not looking, and a catcher who was catching spins from a pitcher without a catcher's mask on. Perhaps some runners hit with thrown balls.

So you are not using an NFHS ball? What are you using?

In case anyone is wondering, these face mask threads DO make a difference.

Case in point: I was never able to get DD #1 to wear a mask at 3B. Her coaches encouraged her to wear one. It was a struggle just to get her to wear a mouth guard. Even after a friend of hers almost broke her nose practicing at 2B, she STILL wouldn't get a mask.

A few weeks later, DD #3 was getting ready for her first 10U tournament. Right before the tournament, a girl on her team got a nasty shiner and had to miss the first day of the tournament. So, DD #3 went with us to get a mask.

Problem was, DD #3 hated the mask. I won't mention the brand, but is was a plastic mask, and felt really bad in the heat. DD #3 would wear the mask in tournament games, but stopped wearing it in practice or rec league games.

After reading these threads, I took a look online to find out more information. Try Google, you can find some real nasty horror stories of girls getting seriously hurt while not wearing a mask.

So, DD #3 and I had a talk. We agreed that she would start wearing her mask for practices and rec league games if I bought her a Rip-It. I scheduled her to buy the mask yesterday.

Since that time, two things happened to convince her. We went to a clinic run by Wisconsin softball coaches and players. A lot of the kids were wearing masks for the practice, and a Wisconsin player was encouraging them for their smart decision.

A few days later, one of DD #3's friends got whapped in the face during practice. Not badly hurt, but it stung.

So, Sunday was 20% off at Dick's Sporting Goods for LL families. DD #3 wanted a white rip-it mask. Now she has one. Now I just want the rain to stop so she can wear it.

Had it not been for these threads, I probably would've insisted she just use her old plastic mask, and only wear it while pitching or IF in TB games, and she would've hated it.
