Here in the northeast(pick a place not west coast or sunny south) you know conditions can be brutal for fall ball/tournaments. Just had the Triple Crown Sports tournament here this past weekend. Saturday great, Sunday friggin 45 with wind ranging from 10 - 20 mph up in Saugerties, NY.
Plate umpire stops game in 3rd inning and ask why dd going to here back pocket from time to time. I come out of dugout and toward circle with both umpires. She pulls out gorilla gold and shows them and does the explaining. Both umpires were perplexed and accused her of using a foreign substance.
I was polite and not being a smartass. I say, its legal and ASA approved, this is what this tournament is using right? Banter back and forth, I say there is no residue on the ball, its for the pads of her fingers. They said they never seen this before. All their years of umpiring yada yada. Opposing coach comes out, and says I seen this before but only for mens fastpitch its illegal for girls. To boot he coaches Softball for highschool. I am starting to feel dumber with these 2 conversations I am having.
Its getting no where, I say if I get the TD to say its ok, will it be fine? He said go ahead and gives a not gonna fly smile go waste your time look.
Take cloth, and packaging and my smartphone which has the the ASA ruling from 2009 and give to wifey to find TD.
Behind the backstop, between innings I am coming back and hear PU say to opponent coaches, If there is one thing I know its ASA rules, I umpire different associations but ASA is what I know best.
8 minutes later, dd has it her back pocket again.
I said nothing to umpires and opposing coaches. I wanted to say so much, but being 45 now and not wanting to show up adults in front of girls I kept my mouth shut.
Parents, Coaches be prepared.......
