IMO, I think it's recognizing where and what fingers contribute in relation to obtaining that hand/forearm position @ release. Seldom is it more than one... the last finger influences the most... and as such is usually the one I focus on.

Slightly more complicated are the cues, as they can differ from pitcher to pitcher. Like those that swear they throw HE, many spinners swear they do something they don't.

Fastpitch Softball Pitching Release Action on Riseball - YouTube

Here's a quick clip of when the thumb comes off the ball when throwing a high speed movement pitch. Note that typically on an offspeed curve/rise/etc. the ball is placed much deeper in the palm which allows the thumb to release much earlier. In this case the fat part/lower base of the thumb will provide the needed grip.
It is my experience that girls with extremely high spin rates typically lift the thumb tip off the ball early....but do tend to sacrifice speed.

Agree with javasource....as you can see from the video clip above the last finger seems to be doing the lions share of the work.
What creates spin???? IMHO the arm whipping into brush contact to transfer energy into the wrist/fingers is the key. Having strong/elastic fingers helps.

That is a great video... (Rick's that is...)

Regarding the curve video from Ken... holy $#!+... Yeah... when your hips get exposed... cut out the back part of the pitch... Probably the most useful thing she said was: "There are different ways to throw the curveball..."

And yes... I made it threw the whole thing... with my left ear on my desk. Heck, I beat the camera dude... he set the camera down and left... ;)

Please--whatever you do, don't beat the camera dude! It's just not nice... ;)

Gah, that video gave me a crick in my neck, and it was finally recovering from the last video a parent sent of her DD's game all filmed at the same angle!:p
