One problem with "pitching by committee" is that it takes time for the new pitcher to learn the ump's strike zone. So, there are often problems with the new pitcher getting behind.

Next to the umpire, the person with the best comprehension of the umpire's strike would be.............drum roll..........the catcher! Not too hard to figure out how that might be used to best advantage.

I think a softball game in which the starter goes 4 innings, the reliever 2 and the closer 1 would be very exciting. I'd be curious to see how the game of fastpitch would evolve at the college level if this tactic becomes popular.

Would we start to see women who can throw in the 70s over 1 or two innings? Would we see masters of spin - maybe a lefty specialist? It could be the next step in the growth of the sport.

One season, DD's all-star team coaches did just that (we only had two pitchers). Pitcher A, pitched first 3 innings, Pitcher B came in to finish off the game. Worked well for them, kept the pitchers fresh and they could pitch multiple games in a day without getting tired. They ended up with a 2nd place finish at Western Nationals. Ironically, in the championship game only 1 pitcher used, and we only lost 2-1.

In general, I like the idea of having a closer. The problem, at least in TB, is few teams have the luxury of 3 or 4 very good pitchers to have a starter, middle reliever, and a closer.

Interesting, Indiana. There is a little baseball team here in KC that has done pretty well with it's committee of closers. I would be interested in seeing something similar in softball. The mentality in softball seems to be keep em in til the bitter end. DD has a girl on her team that can pitch really well for one inning. It's all she has. So since moving up a level, they haven't had her pitch. I say have her pitch! Have her start a game, give one good inning and then blow the other team's mind by switching pitchers.

Candrea has had to rely on several pitchers per game this year at Arizona. I don't think he did it out of design, but more out of necessity. I think if he had a dominant #1 he would not be relying on a staff this year as much.

I've seen this done in little league all stars, 3 good pitchers 2 inning each, worked well for that team. I think it was more to keep each pitcher available for the next day, but still was effective. Not see any of this in tb yet, but I think that it could work, especially if a team has two different type of pitchers, one that can really spin the ball and one that bring the heat
