My granddaughter only began playing last Spring on a rec. team then played Gold travel in Summer and Fall. She has now been invited to practice with the black team for the upcoming season with a chance to make the team full time. Coach recognizes her physical talents but, clearly she has work to do in learning the game, hitting mechanics, etc. You can imagine. My question is, should we get her private hitting coaching, running the risk of learning only their philosophy, good or bad? Also, how to motivate her when she still has some self confidence issues mainly due to her being new to the sport and playing with girls who've been playing since they were 5 years old. She was 12U last year and is now 14U. We were content with her playing Gold again this year but, don't want to turn down the opportunity to learn from the Black team's coaching.

yes to private hitting coach. even if your private coach doesn't teach the philosophy of the swing the same as your travel ball coach the key is your DD is getting more reps. More balls on bats with improve your DD regardless and improve her comfort level at the plate. Motivation however has to come from your DD. She needs to want to play and have a love for it. Experience brings self confidence. competition drives improvement.

Welcome to DFP, don't be surprised if this thread gets moved out of the Shameless Brag forum, it's more of a general question.

Yes, your granddaughter should absolutely start working with a private hitting coach. If she's just getting started as a first-year 14U, she has some catching up to do. The good news is, at that age she will have more body awareness and athleticism to get the maximum benefit from taking lessons. The fact that she made a travel team after one season of Rec means she must be pretty athletic and a quick learner. Never too late!

Also, FYI, 'Gold' and 'Black' teams are not standard definitions. Travel teams come up with all sorts of monikers and rarely does one word mean the same thing to two different teams.

Yes, get a private hitting coach but ask around first. See who is in your area and people's feedback, if you have to travel a little to go to someone that is highly sought after and known it will be well worth it!! Just have to do your homework. I would also advise getting a tee and having graddaughter do tee work a couple times a week on what is being taught in the lesson.

Just going to a lesson isnt enough, have to put in the work then go to lesson to get feedback and adjustments then work on them...

Hope that makes sense.
