Two DDs...
DD#1, the pitcher: I found softball people (college players and coaches) who my DD respected. They would tell her what was necessary to be good. When she didn't want to practice, I would remind her of what the other people said. She needed a little push to get her started, but once she started she gave 100%...when she was 16, by the end of practice her t-shirt was literally soaked.
DD#3, hoops:. She would practice softball if I gave her a push. She would practice basketball on her own. We couldn't keep her off the court. She broke her leg, and she still played. We had the cast replaced 3 times.
