Catchers being a defensive player behind the plate, with the resposibility to defend wild pitches and area behind the batters boxes and beyond, to throw runners out....
Here is a look at some lateral and horizontal mechanics/maneuvers to get behind the ball with glove speed, transition, pivot into throw.

(After this we will add finishing throwing at a target at the other end of the lane. However not included in this video)

I am standing about 8-10 feet away throwing wild pitches.
Beginning is warm up dirt pitch recovery in front. Transition speed pivot.
Middle of video adds lateral/horizontal to sides.
End is good'ol stretch your arm out looooonnngg toss.

Received a phone call yesterday, was asked
"At what age to start training like this?"response is.
Teach catchers starting at 8 years old defensive maneuvers/mechanics, glove work with transistion speed and throwing from feet.
That includes fielding dirt pitches and throwing from feet * without dropping to knee's!
At 11 generally, introduce throwing from knee's.

*For little kids fielding dirt pitches and throwing from feet, without dropping to knee's, is like easy grounders thrown from the pitchers hand.
Gives a better chance when runners are stealing at throwing to get the out.
Still are taught to drop to knee's yet learn, just like taking grounders, how to read the ball to field to get the out.
