Hi everyone!

If you happen to have kept track (and of course you have or you wouldn't be on this site),
I'm looking for data on velocity progression over time as your DD developed.
Also any pertinent notes on the journey.
I'm really just looking for data here more than a dissertation on how everyone is different, etc., etc.
Thanks!

I'll go first:

agevelocity (mph)divisionnotes
930Rec Minorsnewbie no coaching
1035Rec Minorsdad coach via internet info - IR technique
1135Rec Majorsprivate lessons - IR technique
1238U12C Travelprivate lessons - IR technique (FPP) (new coach)
1345U14B Travelprivate lessons - IR technique (Tincher) (new coach)
Level of commitment: lessons every other week, practices 3 days/week, some weight work

10U - 32-35?
10U (2nd year) - 35-37?
12U - 39-42?
12U (2nd year) - 45-48
14U - 53-55
14U (2nd year) - 56-59

Played rec and B level travel until 2nd year 12U, now on high A team. Switched to IR PC at 12U second year, speed dipped for 6 months then recovered. Threw 5 days a week through 12U, now 2-3 days.

PC says DD will gain 2mph for free every year just by normal growth.

DD has above average speed but speed is not what separates her from other pitchers. Spin, location, and varying speeds is what mostly gets batters out, unless you have exceptional speed, and there are very few of those.

Good pitchers don't get squared up that often, and it's not from speed, but it helps.

We throw 3 days a week and a 4th with PC. I never clock my DD except on her birthday or if they clock her at camps.

11 years old- 46 Consistently 45
12 years old- 50 Consistently 48
13 years old- 55 Consistently 52/53

All top speeds.

I don't understand your numbers. I understand everyone else's. So her average is 50 but 5% of the time she can get to 57? That seems off -- I'm probably misunderstanding.

I'm saying the average pitcher in the division throws fastballs with that speed. A top 5% pitcher in the division will throw a fastball that speed..

Thanks for the explanation, that makes perfect sense.

I mistakenly thought you were saying your daughter averages 50 but 5% of the time she gets 57. And my immediate thought was that those two numbers should be closer together. :p

Time of year has a lot to do with it also. In the fall 52 is fast in 12U. July 57 is fast. All my opinion.

MY DD
Age, level, speed, work, comparison
10yo, 10U rec, 35-40? HE PC twice a month, top 10% of league
11YO, 10U rec all stars, 38-42 HE PC twice a month, top 10% of league
12 yo, 12U TB C Fall, 40-43 IR PC Once a week, Bottom half
13 yo 12U TB B spring, 47-50 IR PC twice a week, middle high of league

In offseason speed increase due to, natural growth, core/ strength exercises, and some technical improvement. Still working on all the above.

Age group/Grade

10U Rec/4th - no idea. I was her pitching coach.
11U Rec/5th - 48 - D1 coach who was HE.
12U Rec/6th - 50 - Same coach.
13U Travel/7th - 54 - switched to IR coach after fall - Former DI/II PC.
14U Travel/8th - 56 - Same coach.
15U Travel/Freshman - 61 - Same coach.
16U Travel/Sophomore - will update soon! Definitely feels harder than last year. Yes, I will catch her at times. Same coach.

I just put top speeds I was able to get on PR - but it was the old school one with the red button. The 61 was an official reading at a camp.

Between 11U and 13U she had a major growth spurt. She initially slowed down a little but quickly picked back up again. She has always been the tall kid, skinny kid on her teams.

Between 14U and 15U she did a lot of strength and agility and really fine-tuned her mechanics.

She is still a skinny kid but is starting to slightly bulk up. Her school season ended 2 weeks ago so now she is doing strength training again. Really focusing on legs and core before travel starts up full swing.

She started playing on 18U travel teams last year and always looks to me like she’s minimally 20 pounds lighter than most other pitchers who are her height. She’s 5’8 and is about 128. Physically she is still not yet fully developed. Hopefully she will continue with some incremental speed gains as she continues to mature physically.
