After 10 or 12 weeks, maybe longer, of doing a bunch of completely unnecessary, and quite possibly harmful activities, the benevolent souls who run our wonderful "health care" system allowed my kid to get an MRI.

Yap.

Anyway, anyone else have any experience with this?

She's pretty bummed about red shirting so I didn't ask many questions about recovery and all that.

She did say that one of her trainers wanted her to do some more therapy.

Might have been an adjective to describe what sort of therapy, I don't remember.

She just wants it over so she's going to get it taken care of, hopefully for good.

I can't help you out with what is in store for your daughter. I can offer my two cents as someone who had a torn hip labrum as an adult.

What caused the labrum to get torn? Find the cause because something made that tear. If you know if was from some accident, then fine. If you have no idea what the cause was, then find a world-class OS specialist who specializes in hips and drive/fly there so see that doctor.

It turns out my underlying cause was FAI. It also turns out the doctors I initially saw (6+ OS) had no clue what was wrong with me. I learned why they call what a doctor does as "practice".

Sorry to hear, hope everything goes well and there's a speedy recovery. My DD is going to be out the next 7-8 months after knee surgery. Going to do everything we can to make sure she's ready for school ball in the fall. She's heartbroken about missing spring/summer with her TB team.

My DD has strained her Labrum in the past.
Sitting in school all day seems to shrink this hip flexor/ labrum area. We do torn hip labrum excercises like those listed on the LIVESTRONG.COM website. These yoga poses seem to alleviate her symptoms. Fact from the site 68% of people with no symptoms have tearing when getting an MRI. I'm guessing the 70-100% of people have tearing associated with labrum pain.

Searched hip labrum because I found out mine is torn (most likely; MRI Thursday to confirm). One of my underlying causes looks to be FAI (Femoroacetabular Impingement).

For anybody else with this issue, I second gator's advice about going to a specialist who knows what to look for. I'm lucky to live in a big city with great doctors, so I hit the jackpot on the first visit. The place where I went seems like a go-to place for professional athletes, and teams are not going to send their players to a bunch of Dr. Nicks.

What was your recovery like?

My daughter had surgery to repair a torn labrum in her hip. They repaired the tear and shaved off bony deformities in her pelvis and her femur head. Surgery was in Jan and she came back two weeks ago, is 100% and doing quite well.

It’s a long road. She worked her rear off before surgery to strengthen up and afterward with rehab. I know I’m biased, but she gets all good coming to her for how hard she worked.

My daughter was diagnosed by MRI with a partially torn hip labrum when she was 13. We were offered the option of surgery or physical therapy. Doctor said she would never be able to catch again. We chose PT and she worked hard in strengthening the area around the injury. Caught every game for 4 years in high school and played 3.25(covid) years in college. Tough decision on which direction to go.
