Just read a post and figured I would ask.

When naming a team what do you prefer the year of the team to be listed as, and why? For instance, let say the team is called Ballers 16u. Would you prefer the team to be called Ballers 16u, Ballers 2020, or Ballers 02? Does the label for the birth year, or age make any difference?

Good question. In our area most teams are mixed. You have 1st yr and 2nd yr players on same team so you have to call it 14U for that age group.
We have a few teams that have all the same birth year players and they go by birth year or age. So 1st year 14U is called 13U or team name with 05 after it for 2023 graduation year.

My vote is for 14U, 16U, etc.

Using birth year or graduation year requires too much math to figure out what age level the team is, and...

No reason really, but I am a fan of using birth year (ballers 07). I would love to leave some lengthy explanation that explains this, tragically, I have no good reason.

In our area there are 2 teams at same age group with same name one is an 07 the other was an 06 otherwise just keep it the team name. If ur the only BALLERS in town who cares what age

Tough call - you can have a strictly 2021 team with both 2002 and 2003 players, as they could graduate the same year. This goes for DD. She is a 2002 birth year and is old for school ball but young for travel for her age group.

What do you do if you have players from 3 different graduation dates/birth years? I prefer 18U Gold, 16U Futures, 16U Prospects etc.

We are in a weird space as far as that is concerned. DD's bday is 9/26/03. So, she is a 2003 birthdate, but a 2022 graduate. So, when we see ads for teams, we have to specifically ask. Several teams we have contacted are listed as 2022 teams, but only want 2004 players so that they can all move up or stay back together. We're kind of in no-man's-land, which can be frustrating.

Sep 10, 2006 here. Most of her teammates graduate in 2024 but she will in 2025. Seems like after 14U it doesn't matter much though. At tournaments I usually see age divisions through 14U, then it's just "high school."
