What are dead hands? Your hands aren't really capable of doing much more than holding onto the bat. Everyone talks about the hands, but your hand movements (other than fingers) are mostly controlled by muscles in your wrists and forearms.

Technically you are correct, it’s more forearms. The hands TTB , creating a HPP. The hands do much more then hang onto the bat, been there done that (hands just hold onto the bat and rotate the hips/shoulders).

To me, using your hands to forcibly turn the barrel rearward seems inconsistent with swinging "out from". So does locking the the hands at the shoulder, as efastball advocates. I'm not sure how you swing "out from" without forcibly throwing the hands/knob toward the ball.

efastball is only pointing out via video evidence what MLB players actually do. Every video in this thread shows MLB hitters turning their shoulders around and down, while keeping their hands near the armpit until hip slot. Every. Single. One.

Of course, after hip slot, then you must extend the forearms/hands at the ball - up. down, in, or out - while keeping the biceps near the torso.

Like the discussions. So please take as me really trying to learn. Appreciate it.

How can you extend the forearms - while keeping biceps near torso? I assume you extend more toward pitcher (frontal?) vs opposite batters box.

The core (obliques and many other muscles)stretch and fire rotating the upper shoulder chassis (Josh Donaldson's effortless power) while the hands stay near arm pit until they are thrown/ released/employed (out from) directionally off the chassis (adjustability). Note: on inside pitches the hands sometimes never get released or thrown (they just hold the damn bat) because hitters timing is a little late and they do every thing they can do (including pulling hands in tighter) to put the barrel on the ball. Also some times the hands get released early, think off speed away, and the hitter looks like he is flailing at the ball. Hitting is more about timing than perfect mechanics. That's why guys or girls with less than perfect mechanics can out hit others with "better HL" mechanics. We are not playing tee ball.

yep. Rhythm/timing and BALANCE are #1. Rarely spoke of. But as you get older, pitching gets better. this is where most kids fall off. Can only handle one side of the plate. That’s where mechanics/approach matter.
