Dd is freshman varsity catcher. Coach wants her to straddle home near the apex on tag plays at home. I have never heard of this. She has always put her left heel near the left front corner of the plate. Opinions on straddling home.

No you do not straddle home as a catcher. Not only is it not best practice, it's dangerous. The coach is a moron.
You want to be just up the line and just inside the foul line. On a play where the runner goes straight into home it will be a sweeping tag. If the runner tries to hook slide around you need to drop the left knee and adjust accordingly.

The way the rules are being called today straddling the plate without the ball will probably cost you for obstruction sooner then later.
