The post play corrections that I have read about all address an IF that is not called. How would the umpire correct an IF that is called but not verbalized or signaled?

That is a tougher one ... and I'll admit I did it. Fortunately, nobody paid any attention to me, so I didn't have to sort out my mess. :)

To the theoretical though ... it would all depend on what actually happens. Odds are one of two things:
  • The runners hold and the ball is caught. Nothing to fix (other than the blushing).
  • The runners hold and the ball is dropped ... odds are the erroneous call isn't going to change too much. The runners would have held anyway and the following play would be legit. However, you have to sort it out if that doesn't happen. Who do you think would have been thrown out? Who do you think would have made it safely? Sorry for the defense, but I'm not hearing any argument my call changed whether their fielder did or did not catch it.
