Runners on 2nd and 3rd

Howard Dobson, currently LSU’s hitting coach, stated that when there are runners on 2nd and 3rd they are always going when the ball is hit on the ground. It doesn’t matter how many outs, game score, runners, batter, etc. They are going, no exceptions.

The runner on 3rd base responsibility is that if they are going to be an easy out at home is to hold up before the plate so the batter can make it to 2nd.

This makes sense to me.

If done right the worst thing you wind up with is a runner on 2nd and 3rd with an out. Same as you would have if the runners hold. But you might end up with a run, so its a good strategy.

I would actually consult a coach that has had a winning record such as Mike Candrea. Dobson might be a great coach but he doesn't have a 500 record and should never make a comment that has the words always and never as the main point.

Make the defense make plays. In the example provided I could see where you could end up with first and third or even worse the second runner being thrown out trying to advance to second.

With my luck, I would try that about 3 times and have 3 quick outs at the plate and the parents would be calling for my ouster. I coach the runner to stay on 3rd, until the ball leaves the fielder's hand, such as a throw to first. And I tell them, "If the ball is hit back to third, stay on the base."

And many times, it depends on the runner.

But, I am always willing to listen to other ideas.

The one situation you don't want is being so aggressive from third on this that you end up giving them an easy double play (tag runner from 3rd, throw to first for the 2nd out. Our rule was any ground ball on the right side you automatically go, ground ball on the left where you are at risk for a quick tag you stay other grounders to the left are runners judgement.

This actually DOES make the defense make plays. If you don't pressure the defense they just make an easy throw to first and get an out and you still have runners at 2b and 3b with not having a CHANCE to score.

Not to mention, Dobson isn't the head coach so how does the win-loss record get attributed to him? ALso, he was at Oklahoma for five years before this....I think that they are pretty darn good.

I like Candrea, but he isn't the only coach out there.
