How do you defend the batter from going right to second especially at the younger 12 and 14 levels. Just curious. Also had a question for the umps on here about this play regarding look back rule and motion

Catcher quick glance at runner on 3rd...
If no pick play,
Fire back to the pitcher immediatly.

*Pitcher having the ball is shortest throw to any base.
(Or to middle of base path with an infielder cutting off throw)

Communicate!!

If I remember correctly the LBR does not come it effect until the batter-runner touches 1st base. She can round the base but must immediately retreat or move on the 2nd.

The runner on 3rd is in the same position, once 1st is touched they need to make thier decision.

As previous post states get the ball back to P. Also make sure they are in the circle and don't wonder out of the circle closer to the C.

Edit to add: get someone at 2nd, you do not want it to become a race to the bag.

C check R3... throw to 1B who is next to base... if BR make a move to 2B tag her... if R3 takes off make a play on her.... practice this..
This is an interesting strategy...
Just to add to it...
For the OFFENSE to consider doing~
And the DEFENSE to be aware of~
Remember the walked batter can still take off to 2nd when 1st base is throwing back to the pitcher.
(Its a timing the situation strategy.)

:)
Teaching about pump fakes to the defense is also letting players know it can happen to the offense.

Brings up a good point~
a pump fake by the pitcher
releases the runners!
