Had an interesting play happen this weekend.

Runner1 on 2B. 1-out. in the inning.
Batter/Runner hits a looping fly ball behind 1B in foul territory.
F4 runs down the fly ball, makes the catch, and then continues into dead ball territory.

Runner1 tags up on the catch, and reaches 3B.
Umpire calls her out for leaving early on the tag-up.

Runner1 coach argues she would be awarded 3B anyway on the "catch & carry".
Umpire sticks with the call, becasue the Runner left early on the tag-up BEFORE F4 entered dead ball territory.

I believe the call is correct. But wanted confirmation here, if possible?

Was there a proper appeal at 2B, or did the umpire just call her out?

Curious about the "dead ball territory"...was there no fence, or did she somehow wind up in the dugout?

yes - proper appeal.

catch was in shallow RF/foul territory. No fence.
Basically "ground rules' for determining the dead-ball territory line...
(an imaginary continuation of the fence line near the 1B-side dugout...)

It's a dead ball when the fielder unintentionally carries it into dead ball territory. The award is one base. However, the runner is responsible for completing her base running duties (i.e. tagging up). So, on appeal the runner can be called out. Sounds like the umpire got it right.

Which is it? Did the runner leave 2nd before the ball was caught? Or, after the ball was caught but before F4 entered dead ball territory?

The rule states the runner may legally leave the base when a caught fly ball is first touched.

Runner left early BEFORE ball was caught in foul territory, and then F4 continued her motion after the catch into dead ball territory.
