Preventing jammed thumbs

I purchased a new catcher's mitt for our 8th grade team. While using it myself I have endured numerous jammed thumbs as have the team's two catchers who have been using it in practice and games.

Is this normal? When using regular fielding gloves I have never had this problem before while catching my daughter.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

2. Did the girls have this problem with the catchers mitts they were using before?

3. Better yet, were they using catchers mitts before or infielders gloves when they caught?
