My daughter is one of three pitchers on her team. When not pitching, she is the team's third baseman. She always hits, whether pitching or playing third.
DD plays DI college, was primarily recruited for her pitching, but is also a very good hitter. She's always got the itch to get in there and hit - make something happen - help out her team. She hit 3 homeruns freshman year, and has always hit for power. Depending on the team, pitchers need to work on the other things in the off-season they are good at - things they can help their team with.
Lots of times, the pitchers are some of the better athletes on the field. Like Fernandez, I know two Big Ten pitchers that could consistently crush the ball. IMO, the coach would have to have been crazy to keep them out of the hitting lineup. I've heard that Finch is a pretty decent hitter too.
