not uncommon at all around here for 3-5 games scheduled per week, and the HS coach will try and have 1 pitcher pitch every game.....and then wonders why her arm hurts or parent is upset or they get bounced early in playoffs because best pitcher is exhausted.

'You can't fix stupid....you can only hope to contain it."

Well at some point the parent would have to step in and set some boundaries.

good luck with that and the control freaks that many HS coaches are.
I really don't see the problem, you set some kind of limit on games pitched per week number of pitches thrown per game whatever you, your DD and her pitching coach decide on. This would be discussed with her coach HS and or TB and that would be that. This would not be needed if the governing bodies of softball cared as much about the long term health of girls and young women as they do about boys and young men.

and when the HS coach tells you to pound sand? You're on "his / her" team and will play as directed or not. Then it's bench or not playing. witnessed this numerous times.

Then we would choose not to play for this person that doesn't care about my child. Anyone that allows someone to knowingly jeopardize the health of there child should question their own ability to be a parent.

happens at high schools all over. slightly different example. Local very large high school. pitcher label as #2, very good solid pitcher, fielder and big bat. Wants chance to be able to compete for field and batting order time as coach is well know for #2 pitcher does not play anywhere else. They are ready every game and throw batting practice, that's it. So, coach declined to give said player a chance to earn other play time,,, player walked from school team. And as footnote, the #1 pitcher was entirely gassed by the end of the school season, she had little left for playoffs and team was bounced early.

Or another D1 level sized HS team, bounced earlier than should have been. 173 total innings for the season. 1 pitcher threw 153 innings. others had 16.2 and 3.1 resp. maybe save a few of those meaningless innings off the arm of your best pitcher>?????

Yeah. It's nice that travel ball is much more important than HS ball. Yes, my DD wants to play HS ball. Yes, she'd be bummed if she didn't. Yes, we'll do most everything we can to play HS ball.

However, if her future/health are in jeopardy, we'll walk. And we'd do it in a way that most everyone would understand and agree with.

Would be interested to hear from people who have actually done this at the HS level. Assume for a minute that the HS coach actually cares what you think and would listen to you (which would be unusual), what kind of limits would you place? And would you make exceptions?

What if DD has reached her pitch limit for a game, which is now in extra innings, but needs to keep going for the team to win? What if by continuing she has a chance to set the record for strikeouts in a single game for your state? What if the game is a playoff game?

What happens if the team needs to win the last three games of the season to win its conference, but they have all been rescheduled back to back to back because of rain? Would you let her exceed her pitch threshold to give the team a chance to win? Same question but it’s not a conference title—only the biggest rivalry for her school?

Similar to the conference title situation, what if she reaches a pitch limit at the end of the state playoffs? Would you demand that she be pulled from the state semi-final game? What if she is throwing a perfect game? What about the state finals?

Assume in all these situations that DD is feeling completely “tip top” and is raring to go back out there. No health issues at all, and she is pitching great.

Assume also that the team has other pitchers but they are not near as good as your DD. So the odds of someone else being able to come in and keep the team in a position to win are very low.

One of these days there will be pitch counts for girls just like there is for boys. It has already started with the Little League Association. At some point high schools will adopt one then it will spread to every other organization. Personally I wished it would happen tomorrow.
