This has come up as a question a few times, just thought I'd share a quick success story. I had a great experience repainting DD's batting helmet with Rustoleum 2X paint and primer:
Painter
I went matte black over the original gloss gold, so not the toughest combination in the world, but was just a piece of cake. I've done just fine with OSH brand paint and some patience. but no way does it cover like this, if you're lazy or in a hurry, just get the Rustoleum.
Following the directions, I roughed up the glossy surface with light sanding. When I laid the first coat on, every inconsistency in my sanding showed, but on the second coat it all evened out. I did use a block to try and make the scuffing more uniform, but I certainly could have spent more time and care getting it even. Might try steel wool next time instead.
End of story. I'm no craftsman, anyone can do this. Just make sure it's warm enough and well ventilated where you work.
