Scored tied, extra innings.

With one out, top of the 8th with Oklahoma up:

Romero (maybe the best player in the NCAA) doubles. Aviu singles and goes to 2nd on the throw. So, runners at 2B and 3B with one out.

Clifton hits a sinking line drive to RF. Texas RF makes a spectactular diving catch and to catch the ball. Romero waited until the catch and then races home, sliding around the catcher and touching the plate as she goes by.

The Oklahoma bench empties into foul territory to high five Romero.

And then... the game devolved into a Thursday evening 10U rec game. Sometimes we forget that some of the players are just kids...very talented, but still, just kids.

The Texas players, without the benefit of instant replay, think Romero missed the plate. (She didn't.) Texas freshman 3B Jefferson grabs the ball and begins tagging players. (All Jefferson had to do was touch home plate with the ball in her hand. Had Romero missed the plate, she would have been called out. NCAA 12.10.12)

Texas' catcher takes a couple of steps up the line to watch the mayhem. The umpire, who was in perfect position to see Romero's tag, is looking on like "WTF?"

Aviu, now standing on 3B, sees the catcher turn away from the plate. Conjuring up visions of her last 10U rec game, she takes off for the plate, and crosses the plate easily.

The Texas players turn around and start yelling at the umpire...Mike White (Texas' coach) is sitting in the dugout shaking his head. All that was missing was a few parents jumping out of the stands to rush the ump.

Then:

Bottom of 8th:

With two outs, Texas puts together singles, so runners at 1st and 2nd.

Jefferson (remember her?) lays down a great bunt. 3B throws the ball away into RF. Runner at 1B scores easily.

Then, Mike White makes the mistake we all have made...he coaches 3B with his heart and not his head. He sends the runner who was at 1B on to home.

Oklahoma's RF is All-American, 2018 freshman of the year, CWS all tournament first team, Jocelyn Alo. She throws the Texas runner out by five feet. It is not even close.

Anyway...it was a great game. Can't wait to see Oklahoma and Alabama play.

Watching it now... Thank you DVR which records everything softball.

...

Wow.... Aviu made a great decision to score. Who the hell calls a bunt with two outs no matter who good it was - is this 'All Stars"?. That was almost as good as the Dropped 3rd Strike incident from Florida State a couple of years ago.

Excellent umpiring on those plays BTW. Kept the play live on the Romero tag - and looks like the ONLY person who saw the Aviu coming home from third. Clearly no obstruction on last play ith excellent positioning...

To be fair, she wasn't an All-American because of her defense.... :)

3 good games - until Alo went yard in the 3rd one and broke the game wide open. Main difference in the series was defense. Mike White is going to make a big difference (already is) with the UT program. With UT and Okla State's programs getting stronger - it will definitely help the B12 as a whole.

I was fortunate enough to be at game 1. Two really good teams but you could just feel Oklahoma was a gear better and were going to eventually wear Texas down. Not OU fans in this house but how they are locked in now - not sure who is going to stand in the way of another trophy at season’s end.

Is there any rule against having a dozen players and a bench coach on the field during a live ball? The on deck batter was also in fair territory.

The other question is, once Romero goes to the bench, Texas can appeal some other way right (maybe just asking the ump?).

It was pretty bad how the entire Texas defense fell asleep.

NCAA Rule 9.6.3.2 allow players on the field to congratulate a runner who scored.

The Oklahoma players weren't stopping the defender from doing anything.

Yes...the defensive player touches home plate while in possession of the ball. The umpire then calls the runner out if she failed to touch home.

9.6.3.2 refers to "a runner(s) who is legally running the bases on a dead-ball award", it doesn't apply here.

9.6.1 is close to applying but doesn't imo (it has a pretty severe penalty).

The Oklahoma players weren't "stopping" the defense, but were definitely making things more difficult (have to figure out who the runner was and then get to them).
