From an earlier PM question today...
Yes, the obliques do get involved in "assisting", by pulling the rib cage (and thusly rear shoulder) down and around forward as they're getting pulled on by the top of the already forward turning iliac crest they're attached to at the bottom, and will contract some on their own depending on pitch (lower) location at times.

DD isn’t a great hitter but crushes the ball at times. I think she coils good but collapses more often than not. I don’t think she consistently uses her obliques but when she does it’s a rocket

Tango - the lead obliques are pulling back as the rear obliques are pulling forward. There is a directional aspect to this. If you use the rear leg other than support you will push. The rear leg is getting pulled forward. Natural moves.

If you focus on the lead side it feels like you are swinging. If you focus on the rear side you feel like you are punching. Bonds looks like a puncher. Turner looks like a swinger. Either way you feel like you are chopping wood sideways.

Same action here. People mistake the obliques for the hips. The obliques act on the hips and pull the arm down very quickly.
