What is "right-left" step?
As the fielder goes down to field the ball the step into the ball with their right foot then the left foot lands immediately as the ball is entering the glove. If this is timed up well the fielder will work through the ball without stopping to field the ball. This is for routine balls that the fielder can easily get in front of. Imperative that the fielder learns to chop their feet so they can time it. Big long strides is a no no. Short, choppy and under control. Middle infielders only. Corners are different due to proximity to the batter. Ball gets on them quicker.

Use this progression:
Stationary balls - ball on ground 5 feet in front of player, start chopping feet and step into the ball with a right left step. Go down to field a foot or two behind the ball, not on top of it. Don’t freeze on the ball, keep working through it and fake a throw to 1B. Don’t touch the ball.

Rolled Balls with Partners - like a stated above. Roll balls slowly, straight at each other working the right left step. Time it up correctly without stopping to field it

Coach rolled balls and throw to 1B - same as partners rolling but now going to 1B

Easy Fungos - hit balls right at players with less than medium speed. Work chopping and right left step working through the ball

Can add a different focus to the above once they are proficient with the not stopping to field the ball. Funneling, good fielding posture (face on the ball) or any other flaws you see. Can also work on trying to get on the right side of the ball with momentum going towards 1B when they field it.

This is only for routine balls that the fielder can get directly in front of.
