Watching a middle school game which I believe was playing by NFHS rules.

Home team started with 8 players (can you do that in NFHS?) and took an automatic out in the 9th spot.

Final inning and the home team is down two runs and has runner on first with two outs. The eighth spot comes up to bat. Conferences by both coaches one talking to the batter the other talking to his pitcher.

First pitch and it's a HBP and the umpires call the game (assuming the automatic out was up next for the third out).

I say there is no way that's possible as in most rule sets you can't walk the batter (or hit them) to get the automatic out with two outs.

I swear both coaches misunderstood the rule and that the one coach told the pitcher to hit the batter with the first pitch.

What say you?

Where in what rule sets does it say you can't walk or hit the batter to get to the automatic out?

And to answer your question no you cannot start short handed in nfhs ruleset. You can end short but not start.

In NSA the rule is as follows:

When a team is left with a vacant spot in the lineup because of a player as described in Sec. 4 (b), the opposing team may not, with two outs, intentionally or unintentionally walk the previous batter in order to get the "AUTOMATIC OUT" created by the vacant spot in the batting order. This would also include catcher obstruction to the previous batter or the previous batter being hit by a legal or illegally pitched ball. If the previous batter is walked or hit by a legal or illegally pitched ball, the vacant spot is skipped, the "AUTOMATIC OUT" is waived, and the next batter is the player whose name follows the vacant spot in the batting order. This only applies when there are two (2) outs.

How do they handle this in NFHS when you are down a player?
