Hello , I was wondering if anyone could help me out with information on weather metal cleats were allowed to be worn in any league , division , etc... in softball games ?
I have never heard of any contact sport being allowed to were metal cleats other than golf which is not a contact sport .
The reason i as is my daughter is in a winter ball travel team they classified the league as off season triple crown i believe she is in san diego county california . this past weekend they had a double header and she was slidding in to home and jammed her fingers and the catcher stepped on her hand , with metal cleats on . she has to go see a specialist today for a broken hand . so if any one can help with info on regulations that would be great . thank you for your time

ASA changed the rules this year to allow metal cleats in 18Gold, however I'm not sure about 18u and 16u. I know that 14u and under they are still illegal. I think this went into effect in 2009 because HS rules allow them as well in California. As for other sports, baseball has used metal cleats forever.

I'm really sorry to hear about your daughter and her injury. I hope she heals quickly. Usually metal cleats are blamed for lacerations, not broken bones. I hope she didn't get cut badly.

Here in FL, we wear metal now in HS. So, most of the associations have changed their rules to allow them in 16U and up. Some showcases don't allow them, which always causes us problems because many players don't even own rubber cleats any more.

HS ball in MS metal cleats are allowed. One organization I know of in particular requires their players to have a set of both - metal and molded. Once at a tournament, an entire team came up the sidewalk wearing metal cleats. I can sure tell ya, it was intimidating - just to hear the "chanking" of the cleats.

Hope your daughter heals well. That's horrible...

just to hear the "chanking" of the cleats.

I love that sound.

We wore metal all of my career, which started in 1964 when I was 10. I do not know when the powers that be changed that.

I have never found a pair of rubber cleats that are comfortable. I wear turf shoes, now.

Keep us up to date on your daughter's injury. I hope she heals quickly. By the way, did she go in head first? And does she wear batting gloves? Amy

yes 16u can wear metal in HS and many organizations. That is normal.

Hand injuries and broken fingers are very common injuries due to sliding, regardless of being stepped on. Keeping closed fists minimize it, and should be taught. All it takes to knock player out for most of season is a broken finger or thumb. Some schools make runners run holding batting gloves in fist. (Mizzou?)

If Im not mistaken, I think college now has a rule against carrying batting gloves in the hand. Would have to look for it, but something about all equipment must be worn properly.

Don't know if this is true, but holding pebbles or grass in the hands serves the same purpose (i.e., reduces the instinct to put the hands down)
