The defending state champ is in our region so we had to play them 3 times this season. First batter - lefty - bunts almost every time. We still couldn't get her out even knowing it was coming. If you want your lead-off to do that - she's gotta be fast. This girl was insane fast.
Our lead-off also either slaps or bunts and she's also one of the fastest on the team - and the one with the most hits. I don't think bunting is an issue if your girl is fast enough.

Our 12u team has 2 lefty slappers at the top of the lineup. They each have an OBP north of .600. It’s working pretty well for us.

If the opposition is playing back (even with the base) our lead off batter has the option of bunting.

Straight up bunting all the time by leadoff will not work well at the higher levels. However, a triple threat slapper can bunt, soft slap, hard slap, or hit depending on where defense lines up. Our coach now uses dd (lefty slapper but true righty) to bunt, slap, hit from the left side as leadoff or sometimes hit from the right side with runners in scoring position because she can drive it deep to the OF. It helped get her recruited.

My DD 12U she is the lead off....she will either slap or hit depends on the ability of the catcher and pitcher......the coach leaves it up to her.....

if my DD thinks the catcher is slow out of her stance she is slapping and she always gets to 1st......if she thinks the catcher is quick out she will hit......as long as the hit goes towards ss she gets on base.....if it goes towards 1st then we hope for a bobble.......

not moving the goalposts. simply reacting to your defensive strategy. we love it when you move up and leave holes.
